Football: Tilbury wear down Abbey

FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round

Tilbury 2 v 1 Waltham Abbey

TILBURY secured a 2nd qualifying round place with a hardworking performance over fellow Ryman North side Waltham Abbey. Tilbury made 2 changes from Tuesday’s draw at Redbridge with Jake Pooley returning at the heart of the defence and super sub Danny Francis up top, after his 3 goals coming off the bench.

Francis did not wait long to show his selection was successful one, as he scored after only 3 minutes. Ryan Blackman picked up the ball on the half way line and played a splitting through ball to Francis who slotted home. Tilbury who had started strongly almost made it 2 on 6 minutes when Francis crossed and Attard swung and hit just over his own bar.

Both Conor Mead and Ryan Blackman linked up well on the right giving former Docker Bradley Barnes a difficult afternoon. Abbey had a good chance on 18 when Coley crossed but was denied by a Ramos save. The same 2 players were in action only 2 minutes later when Ramos made another good save. On the half hour again Abbey almost conceded from an error when Owen hit in towards his own net from a Rimmel Daniel cross. On 35 Waltham Abbey were back on level terms when Tom Bruno fired a strong free kick straight into the net from 25 yards giving Ramos no chance.

Before the break Mead fired a strong effort just over, before Whincup made a fantastic save from Francis as the whistle was to go for half time.

Tilbury started the second period strongly and inside the first 2 minutes Daniel headed over from an Aaron Waters corner. Another corner on 51 was the key moment of the half with the ball bobbling around the box, the ball fell to Sam Cutler to volley home to score his second important goal of the cup run and resulting in the winner. Tilbury continued to push and substitute Cook hit just wide from a Waters cross

In the final 2 minutes the game continued to entertain with Ramos making a great save when Bruno fired at goal. 5 minutes into injury time Abbey keeper Whincup who was still up from a corner, shot at goal and it took a great header off the line by Mead to deny them. The game finished with 2 yellow cards and a sending off for Chris Sargent for violent conduct for raising his hands to Harry Cook.

After the game a delighted Manager Paul Vaughan said “Really pleased with the work ethic of the side, we defended well against a good attack and it’s great for the club to make progress in the FA Cup”

Tilbury are back in action next Saturday when they entertain Wroxham.
