Horndon mums trek Grand Canyon and raise £11,500 for Breast Cancer Campaign

TWO friends return from an epic trek through one of America’s most inhospitable terrains.

Nancy Smith & Andrea Nunnery both from Horndon on the Hill have just returned from a trek into the Grand Canyon in aid of charity Breast Cancer Campaign.

The journey took them into the centre of the canyon, through the Havasupai Reservation at its base and then ascending all the way up on the last day of their hike.

The pair took take five days to complete the journey, walking eight hours a day, climbing down terrifying waterfalls, jumping off & through of waterfalls and camping under the stars.

Andrea, from Horndon on the Hill decided to embark on the trek after her 42 yr old sister was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in November 2012. The 40-year-old said ‘I was shocked when I found out that 1 in 8 women will at some point in their lives be affected by breast cancer and I wanted to do something to raise money & awareness of breast cancer in younger women. This is completely new to me, I like to keep fit but this is a challenge like no other. Nancy & I have supported each other through 8-16 mile long training treks in all weathers’.

‘It isn’t just the training that has been a challenge but also the fundraising. The support from friends, families, colleagues, the village, the local community and innumerable local business has been overwhelming. It was a relief that we met our £3,350 target many months ago, so we have been able to put the fun into fundraising and organised some really enjoyable events. ’

Nancy & Andrea are raising money for Breast Cancer Campaign a charity that’s mission is to beat breast cancer by funding innovative world-class research to understand how breast cancer develops, projects throughout the UK worth over £16.5 million.

They said ‘So far, we have held a Chocolate Party, a Coffee & Shopping Morning, a Barn Dance, a Table Top Sale, a Community Fun Night & Dog Walk and a Boot Sale. Altogether we have raised just over £11,500 which is beyond our expectations and we would like to thank everyone for their support at our events, their donations and their words of encouragement before embarking on the trek.’

The pair are not stopping there; they are taking a short break before planning their 2014 events. If you would like to donate to their fundraising, please visit www.virginmoneygiving.com/andreanunnery
