DESPITE concerns that GCSE results would decline due to a number of changes under the Gove stewardship, Thurrock results in the main, have held firm.

Harris Academy remain the outstanding academic school in the borough, with a remarkable 93% of students gaining 5 A* to C (inc English and maths)

Hathaway Academy improved by 5% to 44% but that is a tremendous leap in their first year of being an academy.

Gateway Academy have reported that 50% of their students gained 5 or more A* to C (including English and maths).

The same applies to Ockendon Academy who have also maintained an even keel at 50%.

A remarkable result as they were exactly the type of school that many felt would suffer from reforms to exam system.

Grays Convent have reported that 63% of students attained five GCSES at A* to C (including English and maths).

This puts the school back to their 2012 figure after slumping to 56% last year.

Gable Hall have reported that 74% of students have achieved at least 5 A* to C (inc Eng and Maths). Matching their performance from last year.

William Edwards secured that third place spot with 70% of all pupils gaining the 5 A* to C mark. Their rivals St Clere’s gained 67%.

The two schools that may well be disappointed are Hassenbrook Academy and Ormiston Park Academy. Hassenbrook produced their worst results since 2009, attaining 55%.

    10. Ormiston Park Academy: 38%

Overall, the percentage of students with at least five or more A* to C (including English and maths) results continues to rise in the borough, something celebrated by Thurrock Council Leader and education portfolio holder, Cllr John Kent.

He visited two schools – the Harris Academy on Chafford Hundred, and the Hathaway Academy in Grays – on Thursday (21 August) morning to speak with school leaders and the youngsters themselves.

He said: “It’s always heartening to see so many young people cheered by their results. Not everyone gets A*s but to achieve to the best of your ability is always something worth celebrating.

“What’s particularly pleasing is the overall Thurrock increase in the benchmark five or more A* to C results including English and maths, where we are now well above last year’s national average.”

He said: “I know some heads were concerned because of the changes to the system, but looked at overall, Thurrock’s secondary schools have again continued moving forward and improved.

“When you combine this with the results from the sixth forms and colleges last week, it shows that Thurrock really is a place where education counts and where success can be celebrated.

“It was great to be able to pass on my congratulations personally to the students teachers and executives at both the Harris Academy and Hathaway this morning. I’d also like to take this opportunity to congratulate all those who achieved what they wanted in both A Level and GCSEs this summer.

“I’d also like to encourage those who might not have been celebrating as much to take a deep breath and see what options there are. Don’t give up.”

Carmel Littleton, Thurrock Council’s director of children’s services, said: “I’m very pleased to be able to say Thurrock’s results have improved yet again – and I too would like to pass on my congratulations to those everyone who worked so hard to achieve these results.”

    Overview

THE proportion of teenagers getting a grade C or better at GCSE rose for the first time in three years as more than 500,000 pupils in England, Wales and Northern Ireland received their results on Thursday morning.

There was a slight decrease in the proportion of pupils getting an A*, down 0.1 percentage points to 6.7%, but the proportion getting a C grade or higher rose by 0.7% points to 68.8%.

But the overall figures masked wider variations in individual subjects, with the proportion of teenagers getting at least a grade C in maths rising by almost five percentage points, to 62.4%, but the proportion doing as well in English falling by almost two percentage points, to 61.7%.
