Thurrock Council leader John Kent in bullish mood after election victory

THURROCK Council Leader, Labour’s John Kent has issued the following statement following last week’s by election in the West Thurrock & South Stifford ward:

Gaining more than half of all votes cast, an outright victory, is testimony both to Labour’s candidate Terry Brookes and to the whole Labour team who put in so much hard work in the weeks leading up to Thursday.

It shows that people in Thurrock are not fooled by the scare tactics being employed by our opponents nationally and locally and that they trust Thurrock Labour to run local affairs sensibly in difficult times.

What is more, the collapse of the Conservative vote in the MP’s Purfleet backyard is particularly telling.

Of course, all three of the parties who foughtThursday’s election will be crunching the numbers and looking for lessons to learn.

My personal concern is what Labour must do and the answer is quite simple – more of the same.

That’s more hard work talking to local people in the streets and on the doorsteps, explaining what we are doing here for local people – more jobs, better educational outcomes and chances, and better homes for those living here.

We must continue to work hard to deliver jobs and growth – be that at Purfleet, Lakeside, Grays, Tilbury or in the east of the borough.

We should carry on talking up our borough; carry on ensuring sound financial management of the council; and carry on putting Thurrock people first.
