West Tilbury WI: Monthly report

THE speaker for West Tilbury WI introduced by Joanne Phillips was MP Stephen Metcalfe.

Stephen gave the members a reflective insight into how always interested in politics even from a small boy when he stood in a primary school election, although he did not win this it inspired him to pursue his goal.

He first achieved his first elected job on a local council in the Epping Forest area.

Dustbins had been set for two week emptying, thus leaving people angry at the mess this caused and he had the job to sort out the cleaning up of the rubbish.

From here he applied to become a MP first he had to sit Question and Answers tests before going to Ilford South for his first assignment.

In 2010 he became elected as MP for Basildon and East Thurrock. On his first visit to his office in the House of Commons he was shown where to hang his coat he was intrigued to see a pink ribbon that was there to hang a sword. This is a tradition still in place from days past. With three hundred emails to answer daily there is little time to relax.

Stephen said he will try his best to answer any query and sort any problems for his constituents. This was a very interesting insight into the hard work our MP’s have to do.

An outing has been arranged for a visit to the House of Commons in June for our members.

The Spring Group meeting this month will be on 29th April and members have been busy making Baby blankets and knitted Teddies for this.

The members that went to the AGM presented a donation of £24 to George Mills for his charity.

West Tilbury WI meet the first Tuesday in every month at West Tilbury Village Hall

    7pm -9-30pm

Next meeting May 5th A Beetle Drive will be held.
