TOP Thurrock Council officers and Network Rail representatives met again on Thursday (28 May) to discuss the future of the level crossing in Grays High Street.

Following the meeting, Council Leader and Grays councillor John Kent said: “It have been told it was a very encouraging and positive meeting where Network Rail agreed with us that the number of people misusing the crossing had fallen.

“But this doesn’t mean the crossing’s future is safe. Last week I thanked local people for the way they had acted and this week I ask them to continue with this sensible behaviour.

“We must make sure it becomes a permanent thing and we don’t put the crossing’s future at risk again.”

He added: Although we have agreed the situation has improved, the misuse has not gone away totally.

“Both the council and Network Rail will be monitoring the crossing and maintaining their safety campaigns, working with each other – and partners like c2c and South Essex College – so the high profile of using the crossing properly is maintained.”

He said: “We said last week we would let people know what was happening and that is exactly what we are doing.

“Whatever happens we must not lose our focus. The level crossing plays a vital role in the increasing prosperity and the bright future of the town as a whole – at least until alternative and pedestrian-friendly measures are put in place.

“In the meanwhile everyone who uses the crossing should do so sensibly and safely.”
