PREVIEW: Aveley looking to regain early season spark in away test at Soham Town.
By Matt Biggadike
Aveley FC travel to 21st placed Soham Town in tomorrow’s Ryman division North clash, looking to regain the early season form that saw them go 5 matches unbeaten back in August.
Speaking ahead of the game, Aveley boss Justin Gardner spoke of the season so far: “We’ve had a good run in the FA Cup which has been very pleasing and has earned the club some much needed revenue”
“In terms of the league, I think we’re about four points off where we need to be. But we have games in hand over the other sides so it’s important we pick up points in those games. Overall I’m happy” he added.
Aveley started the season in fine form, going on a run of four wins and a draw after the initial opening day defeat to Bury Town. However Gardner feels the teams recent league performances haven’t been quite so impressive: “Up until the last few games we maybe took our foot off the gas, this could be down to complacency.”
Despite this, Gardner felt the team should take confidence from their impressive FA Cup run which came to an end against Vanarama conference south side Havant and Waterlooville in a tightly contested game last weekend.
“We have shown we can compete with a team at a high level. I thought on the day we were unlucky to lose. Hopefully we can take confidence from this cup run into the league and if we play like we did last weekend we should pick up results.”
