intu Lakeside backs apprenticeships

INTU Lakeside is part of intu’s national apprenticeship programme which launches this week following the success of a pilot project last year

The recruitment of 20 apprentices across intu centres in 2016 will begin during National Apprenticeship Week

intu, the UK’s leading owner and manager of prime regional shopping centres including intu Lakeside, is rolling out its first national apprenticeship scheme following a successful pilot last year.

National Apprenticeship Week 2016 (March 14 – 18) marks the start of intu’s new programme to recruit, train and employ 20 apprentices across its centres. In their first year, these apprentices will gain experience from within every area of its business before moving on to a specialised field.

The programme will guarantee apprentices at intu Lakeside a full time role at the centre following the completion of their apprenticeship which will range from two to four years depending on their chosen business area.

Marc Myers, General Manager at intu Lakeside said, "As one of the largest employers in the region, we are always looking to champion young people looking to take their first steps on a career ladder. intu’s apprenticeship programme will be a fantastic opportunity for local young people to gain vital new experience, skills and qualifications within a range of different business areas such as marketing, customer service and facilities management. We already employ two apprentices at the centre and we are excited to welcome even more to intu Lakeside over the course of the year and share our knowledge and experience with them."

The programme has been rolled out at intu Lakeside and all other intu branded centres across the country. Recruitment began during National Apprenticeship Week which celebrates the positive impact apprenticeships have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy.

intu has worked with leading apprenticeship provider First4Skills to set up and develop the programme which recruited five apprentices during its pilot year, including Adam Gillespsie (18) from Upminster and Billy Wells (17) from Canvey Island, who have been working at intu Lakeside.

Billy said: “I had a seasonal job that was coming to an end when I found out about this apprenticeship role at intu Lakeside. I’ve worked across several different departments since I started which is a really good way of finding out what you’re good at. Every day is different but I’ve learnt a lot and everyone has given me such a warm welcome. The health and safety side of the business has been the most interesting to me so far as there are so many different things the team does to keep everyone safe.”

Amanda Kerr, Head of Client Services at First4Skills said: “First4Skills is delighted to be working with intu as their apprenticeship provider to deliver their national apprenticeship programme. The world behind the scenes of a shopping centre is an area that is often a mystery and many people are not aware of the multitude of different job roles and career opportunities that are available.

“intu’s apprenticeship programme is a fantastic opportunity for people to embark on their career journey. It is a forward thinking company that really values its employees with lots of opportunities to grow and develop while gaining nationally recognised qualifications.”
