Cricket: Sun shines on Belhus

Clean Sweep for Belhus!

On the opening day of the Shepherd Neame Essex League 2016 season, all of the Belhus Cricket Club Saturday XIs chalked up convincing victories.

Belhus CC 1st XI 259-5

Leigh-on-Sea 92

Batting first at Chalkwell Park, Belhus 1st XI racked up a highly respectable 259 for 5 thanks to a cultured 111 from the consistent run-getter Joe Joyce, supported by skipper Danny Joyce (37) and Michael Fogg (29). In their run-chase, Leigh-on-Sea had no answer to the pace of Connor Day who took 6 for 40 from 13 overs to dismiss Leigh for 92 and steer Belhus home to an impressive 167 runs win.

Leigh-on-Sea 150

Belhus 2nd XI 153-5

Under the leadership of new skipper John Lewis, Belhus 2nd XI dismissed Leigh-on-Sea for just 150 after paceman Jack Martin-Hussey had returned a career-best 6 for 31. In reply, Jake Wolfe top-scored with a masterly 49 to enable Belhus to reach the required target in 31 overs and clinch a comfortable 5 wickets victory.

Thurrock and Orsett 96

Belhus 3rd XI 100-3

Under the stewardship of another new captain for 2016, Jack Plane, the Belhus 3rd XI’s bowlers shared the wickets between them to dismiss Orsett for just 96. After tea, it was skipper Plane who lead from the front in stroking a handsome 40 not out as Belhus comfortably chased down the runs to cruise home to a 7 wickets win.

Belhus 4th XI 177

Oakfield Parkonians 149

Against Oakfield Parkonians, the Belhus 4th XI rattled up a competitive 177 thanks largely to a fine maiden half-century by Zak Wilson who was ably supported by skipper father John, with a powerful 29. In reply, the OPs were never really in the chase as tight bowling by the Belhus attack saw them home to a 28 runs win.
