Football: Tilbury out of the FA Cup

FA Cup 1st Preliminary Round

Felixstowe and Walton United 2 Tilbury 1 (Att 247)

Report courtesy of

After going in front early, Tilbury produced a below par performance to exit the FA Cup for another season. Conor Mead, Toby Aromolaran and Tom Anderson returned to the side and hopes were high, as Tilbury took the lead after 7 minutes when a cross into the box found Joe Nightingill who played the ball to Kurt Smith to slot home. The home side also went close when Matthews over ran the ball when through on goal.

The home side came into the game with Kyron Andrews causing problems for the Tilbury defence. On 17 they were rewarded when Matthews was brought down in the box by Eli Beniot and Stuart Ainsley initially saw his spot kick saved by Lee Butcher, but was first to the ball for the rebound.

Felixstowe started to dominate the game with Hillyard missing a great chance on 20, but somehow hit wide when through on goal.

Both sides had half chances before the break, with Tony Martin seeing his dangerous free kick well saved.

Tilbury started the second period well with Martin again going close. On 53 Tilbury were denied what seemed a certain penalty when Harry Cook was clearly brought down in the box, but the referee waved away the appeal.

The home side continued to break from the back well and were rewarded on 64 when Butcher parried a fierce shot from the right into the path of Miles Powell to score. Both Andrews and Powell had chances to put the game out of sight for the home side late in the game as they denied Tilbury any clear chances.

The home side kept possession of the ball deep into injury time and the final whistle brought delight to the Thurlow Nunn side and a good healthy crowd.

Tilbury look to put the performance behind them as they travel to Thamesmead Town on Tuesday night.
