IKEA launch new Hemgjord range in Thurrock

Hemgjord

IKEA has launched the new HEMGJORD range, the sixth limited edition collection of handmade products co-created between IKEA designers and artisans from the social enterprises, Rangsutra and Industree PT in India.

HEMGJORD includes hand embroidered and finished cushion covers and table runners, as well as a range of boxes, accessory bags and pouffes made from sustainable banana fibres. The collection will be exclusively available at IKEA Southampton, Wembley, Tottenham, Leeds and Lakeside stores from early March.

The social enterprises IKEA works with in India are managed and operated by women, helping to empower them through employment. For these women especially, a sustainable income opens up a world of new possibilities like having a bank account, being able to invest in their children’s – especially their daughters’ education and their self-confidence as artisans and businesswomen.

IKEA hopes that by building long-term partnerships, the social entrepreneurs will gain access to a global marketplace. This aim is to increase the success of both of the enterprises, and improve the lives of the artisans.

Vaishali Misra, Social Enterprise Initiative Leader, IKEA of Sweden said:

“For the most vulnerable members of society, earning an income opens up new opportunities. Women in rural communities often have little or no access to education, healthcare or paid employment. Forming long-term partnerships with Rangsutra and Industree PT gives women in rural India a chance of independence and a better future.”

In addition to their community impact, all materials used in the products are locally sourced and come from IKEA approved suppliers:
