An Essex Police spokesperson said: “We arrested a 55 year old man from Grays on suspicion of possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply on Sunday, November 19.

Whilst in custody the man became ill at around 9pm and was taken to Basildon hospital where he was sadly pronounced as dead.

We have now referred the case to the IPCC, as is protocol.

An IPCC spokesperson said: “We have begun an independent investigation following the death of a 55 year old man in police custody on Sunday 19 November. Shortly after being arrested and being taken to Grays police station on Sunday evening, the man became unwell.

“He was taken to Basildon hospital where he was later pronounced dead. IPCC investigators were sent to the police station on Sunday night to obtain early accounts from the officers involved.
