The M25 clockwise in Essex is closed between J30 (Thurrock, Tilbury, A13) and J31. This closure is due a serious collision involving 2 HGVs at J31 which will require extensive recovery and clean-up operations. One HGV involved overturned on to the embankment and both HGVs suffered significant damage. There is also a substantial diesel spillage which has resulted in significant and widespread damage to the road surface. A complex recovery operation is underway, but this has reached the stage where the ditributor road between J30 and J31 is no longer blocked, and traffic can be allowed to use it. Resurfacing work on the main carriageway between J30 and J31 will be carried out overnight.

Traffic is being diverted off the M25 clockwise at J30. From here, it should cross over the M25/A13 roundabout, taking the second exit and joining the ‘distributor’ road that runs between J30 and J31. From here, cross the M25 J31/A1306 roundabout and rejoin the M25 clockwise at J31, continuing over the QEII Bridge into Kent.

There are still severe delays on the approach from both the M25 and surrounding local roads, including the anti-clockwise approach to Dartford Crossing, where traffic metering has taken place. Please allow plenty of additional time for your journey and consider alternative routes if at all possible.

As HGV recovery work has been sufficiently completed to do so, the M25 clockwise approach to #Dartford has now been partially reopened. The closure remains between J30 and J31, however traffic can now pass via the adjacent feeder lanes, which were blocked by the HGV.

There are still severe delays on the clockwise approach from J28, and also on the anti-clockwise approach to Dartford.

Resurfacing work will now be required in order to reopen the main carriageway, which will take several more hours.

Statement from Highways Agency: “M25 J31 incident. It is not possible to open the sliproad on to the Bridge from J31 as one of the HGVs involved in the collision overturned on to the embankment next to this sliproad. Once HGV is safely removed we will look to re-open this sliproad.

Essex Police: “We are currently at the scene of a collision involving two HGVs on the M25 clockwise between junction 30 and 31.

The stretch of road has been closed and will remain closed for the next few hours due to the complexity of the vehicle recovery.

This is already having a knock-on effect to the traffic volume on surrounding roads, in particular the A13 and the A127.

We recommend avoiding these roads where possible and leaving extra time for your journey.

Both drivers are being treated for minor injuries, no arrests have been made and enquires are ongoing to establish the circumstances around the collision.

Witnesses or anyone with dash cam footage are asked to contact Chigwell Roads Policing Unit on 101 quoting incident 647 of August 28. Alternatively you can email collisionappeal@essex.pnn.police.uk.
