Rugby: Thurrock beat the weather to beat Westcombe Park

FOR the third consecutive Saturday the weather played a significant part in the way the game panned out. It was cold and wet, and Thurrock lost the toss and had the advantage of the elements, and after early pressure Sam Stanley knocked over a penalty before Jake Barrand Was worked some space and he went over in the corner, the conversion fell short.

Thurrock continued to press and another break from man of the match Henry Bird gave Dan Stone the chance to score a try just wide of the posts, this time with the help of the post and the crossbar the conversion gave the visitors a 15-0 lead

Just before the break Sam Stanley slotted home another penalty which probably proved to be vital for an 18-0 half time lead.

The conditions started to get worse as the game re-started, and the home side came out and started to make good of their possession, which was rewarded with a converted try.

Thurrock however still looked dangerous in attack but could not find the final killer pass.

After defying a wave of home side attacks and only 5 minutes remaining Dan Carey was shown a yellow card for collapsing the maul and the referee awarded a penalty try reducing the deficit to just 4 points which in the very dark gloom, became a frantic period for the visiting side but the 14 men dug deep and knowing a penalty would be no good the visitors kicked towards the corner and from the resultant line-out Thurrock stole the ball and kicked it out of the park to hear the refs full-time whistle to record their 4th consecutive win.

Thurrock next game is 5th January 2019 when they play Tottonians at Oakfield
