THURROCK LADIES 3s 1 – BRENTWOOD 4s 3
THURROCK Ladies 3s travelled to Brentwood for their last game of the season on Saturday, the frozen pitches that caused the rescheduled date a distant memory in the glorious spring sunshine. Thurrock started well and pushed up from the first whistle but Brentwood’s experienced defence kept all their attacks out and started to push play up towards the Thurrock D. Thurrock’s defence held firm but an unfortunate foot saw Brentwood awarded another short corner and although Thurrock’s goalkeeper saved it, she didn’t clear it away and Brentwood went 1-0 up.
At halftime Thurrock were positive they were going to get something out of this match but Brentwood had other ideas. A skilfully taken pushback saw them straight into the danger area and they scored their second. Thurrock midfield went for it and their wingers Charlotte ‘Phil’ Mailey and Isabel Crawford were stretching Brentwood’s defence far and wide. This meant Izzy Overy could get right on the top of the area and distribute the ball to Sally Taylor and Lucy Cowman. They both drew great saves from the goalkeeper.
All the pressure finally got too much and Sophie ‘Dave’ Runcorn struck the ball and got Thurrock on the scoresheet. Brentwood were not happy and pushed straight back up. Thurrock’s super-sub Jackie Simmonds did a great job of covering every position on the pitch. Jess Mager, Laura Reynolds, Hayleigh Deex and Lisa Simmonds kept wave after wave of attack out but after a ball swept wide went over the backline and the umpire awarded Brentwood another short corner, Thurrock were so charged up for it, there were unfortunate timing problems and after having two players sent back over the halfway line, it left just three facing the short corner. Despite a superhuman effort from Jess Mager and Hayleigh Deex doing the splits and getting her stick to the ball, it ricocheted and ended up in the net. Final score 3-1. Girl of the game was Isabel Crawford.
