Thames Estuary Yacht Club help T100 walkers cross the Thames
ALI Pretty and walkers on the T100 walking festival crossed the River Thames from Essex to Kent on Monday 15th July with some help from the Thames Estuary Yacht Club.
Outdoor arts organisation Kinetika, based in Purfleet, began their 2019 T100 walking festival on Saturday 6th July in Grays. A 15 day journey down the river, T100 covers almost 170 miles this year and is a personal pilgrimage for Kinetika Artistic Director, Ali Pretty. She is walking for all 15 days and has vowed not to get in a car at any point on the journey.
Having walked to Southend with a stop at Village Green on 15th July, Ali had to find a away to cross the river as the second leg of T100 takes place in Kent. The Thames Estuary Yacht Club stepped in with an offer to help Ali and small group of walkers make the crossing from Southend on Sea to the Isle Of Sheppey.
This allowed them to join other T100 walkers in Kent and continue the walk from Sheppey along the south coast of the Thames to reach Gravesend on Friday 19th July for a special twilight market before getting the Tilbury Ferry on Saturday 20th to take part in the Tilbury Carnival.
The yacht club’s Commodore, Neil Woodbridge skippered the rib which took Ali and her group to Sheppy. Neil said: “We are really happy to be supporting such an interesting community adventure. For us the Thames and its environs are an amazingly beautiful landscape. We are very proud of our Estuary and its heritage which links beautifully to the concept of communities and the notion that many of our ancestors arrived here by sailing up the Thames Estuary. ‘secundum tamesim quovis gentium’ is the motto of Thurrock – which means “along the Thames to all the peoples of the World”. A journey on which we are happy to facilitate the flag bearers of T100”
Ali Pretty will lead T100 walkers to take part in Tilbury Carnival on Saturday 20 July with hundreds of dancers in carnival costume. For more details about the free Tilbury Carnival, please go to http://tilburycarnival.tott.org.uk/
