WE are sure all the candidates are breathing a sigh of relief that they can now say that the election is next week. The Conservatives have said all along that in Thurrock they will fight on national issues. They have also said that timing is key.
The question is: Has the plethora of high profile Tories including David Cameron, rattled Labour candidate Carl Morris. Now that his seat is under attack does he feel that the majority of 6,375 is really under threat. The pundits are split: Labour hold by just over 1,000 is the general consensus but others see Jackie Doyle-Price as sneaking in with a 500 gain. Either way, it could be a long night if someone asks for a recount.
The weekend was busy for Carl. Out on the stump; at St George’s services in St Peter’s and the Fete in Aveley. The Labour campaign appears to be specifically targeted at the key wards, streets and houses. They believe they have walked the hard yards in Thurrock, not only over the last month but also the last five years.
For Carl, everything rides on this. It is the culmination of a quarter of a century of campaigning and civic duty. Rattled or resolute? You decide….

Interesting that PPC Morris states that Thurrock Council is now a laughing stock whilst under Tory administration, bit like the whole country being a laughing stock under the current Labour administration.
Gordon Brown, Substance over Spin, do me a favour Carl, the Labour Party have more spin than a Waltzer.
More Police on the streets in Thurrock, where are they??? you can never get them to attend when you want them and as for the PCSO’s this is policing on the cheap, they have little or no power and should not be a replacement for a real Police Officer, as for the Law and Order in Thurrock, I think Carl must have his head burried firmly in the sand, Thurrock is above the national average for:
Robbery Offences
Burglary Dwelling Offences
Theft Of Motor Vehicles
Theft From Motor Vehicles

So much for your spin PCC Morris
Morris’s Labour has failed Thurrock as it has failed the country as a whole.
It took the decision to close 2500 sub post offices in 2008, depriving communities of a vital life line, and jobs. Andew McKinlay, Morris’s boss, voted for that motion in Parliament and against a Tory motion to prevent such counters at Hathaway Rd and Cramavill Street from disappearing.
Violent crime is up by a remarkable amount in the UK, as it is in Thurrock under Labour. Police officers, regardless of the PCSO PR exercise, are shackled to their paperwork and pointless targets rather than out tackling crime and being seen. They now spend less than 20% of their time ‘on the beat’ accordingly.
And Morris talks of a Labour party that have delivered ‘value’ on law and order when there are now 180 knife crimes each day UK wide and criminals given chance after chance to escape custody rather than being dealt with in the prison system properly and that is because Labour have not invested in prisons one bit. They are full.
Unemployment under Labour sits at 2.5 million and local people’s houses are being repposessed at a a rate as fast as the newly nationalised, Labour owned lenders can change the locks on them. Fair? Hardly…
Morris speaks of Tory recessions with the gall that seeks to re-write recent history in that Gordon Brown has taken a thriving economy as handed to him by the Conservatives in 1997, turned it upside down and shaken it until there is nothing left.
Our budget deficit is greater than Greece, which is bankrupt as of today with its debt regraded as ‘junk’.
The gap between rich and poor in what was once Great’ Britain, is wider now than ever. Again, at Labour’s hands.
Morris can go all Alistair Campbell on us and try to convince Thurrock that Labour has been good to it. But the scars of the Blair Brown years are too fresh for anyone to be taken in by his dodgy rantings and desperate pleas.
No wonder he admits that people on the door step are telling him of their discontent. ‘Brown is not the best thing since sliced bread’, says Morris.
Well Carl. The bread is stale now and it’s time it was thrown out.
Brown may have today yet again proved his unsuitability for No 10. But would the Tories be any better? It’s no surprise that 44% want a hung parliament. This can be achieved by voting Tory in Sth Basildon/E Thurrock to block another Labour Commons majority, but Labour in Thurrock to prevent a Tory one.
Should I mention ‘immigration’?
I think I got away with it – am I a bigot?
The Prime Minister Gordon Brown thinks so!
Where to start with Russell Quirk…
Lets give you some facts about the Greek situation:
UK debt is 56% of national income, Greek debt is almost twice that.
The average debt maturity for the bonds the Greek government has issued is three years; the average debt maturity for UK bonds is 14 years.
The Greek economy is expected to be in recession to the tune of 2.5% this year and 3.5% next year, while the British economy is actually growing.
The UK current account deficit is slight less than 2% of the GDP of national income – the Greek figure is about 10%.
I could go on to the violent crime measures:
The Recorded Crime Figures for violent crime are falling, as are all crime figures apart from Domestic Burglary (up 1%) and drug offences (up 6%). The British Crime Survey shows that peoples perception of the risks of being the victim of violent crime have stabilised. All of which makes the statement on page 55 of the Conservative Manifesto that “violent crime is rising” a lie.
Please try be a bit more informed, when you are throwing statistics around.
Even Lambo was a bit selective in his quoting the full figures on his link show a much better picture, in that (apart from Burglary) Thurrock is Belos the national average in serious crimes. Full figures below:
Thurrock ENGLISH AVERAGE
Violence against the person 14.7 15.0
Sexual offences 0.7 0.9
Robbery offences 1.2 1.0
Burglary dwelling offences 5.8 4.3
Theft of a motor vehicle offences 5.4 2.3
Theft from a vehicle offences 9.1 6.3 (all per 1000 of the population)
And you haven’t even got me started on the big (scary) problem with the Big Society. Which if let loose will probably eat you all alive…
So smithereeen. Everything is just great then?
It does make me chuckle when defenders of the Labour record talk of ‘falling’ crime and ‘reducing’ debt when the pinnacle from which you say they are falling is far, far higher than in 1997 when Labour came to office.

Thurrock is ‘below the national average etc…? But that is the point is it not? The ‘national average’ in so far as violent crime against the person; educational standards, MRSA in hospitals, unemployment, and of course debt, are all HIGHER than they were 13 years ago. Being ‘below national average’ is little comfort to the vistims of Labour’s taxed, trodden and crime ridden Britain.
Sadly Sir, it is you that appears to need more information that the leftist propaganda stats that shroud the reality of broken Britain both socially and economically.
With Labout THIRD in the polls and at their lowest ebb for decades, it seems that more folk agree with my view than yours.
The problem Russell, is that I am quoting the official statistics not “leftist propoganda stats” and you are quoting a news report from one of the most right wing papers in the country.
It’s a case of “they would say that wouldn’t they”.
The Mail article claims that the Government review is being organised because civil servants “fear” that there is under reporting. This is a statement that requires no justification or back up, but it clearly is a view rather than a fact.
And even this article cannot avoid stating “But both police recorded crime and the BCS showed the total number of crimes fell by 7 per cent last year. There were falls in burglary, robbery and criminal damage.”
If you have figures which show that crime is higher now than 13 years ago, then share them.
By the way, I never said everything was great, I can see that there are both good and bad things going on in the world. If I were to follow the Daily Mail’s line I would just see bad. I try to avoid lefist propoganda as well as right wing ranting.
Cameron has to tell you everything is really bad otherwise there is no point in changing the government. The Daily Mail wants Cameron and the Conservatives to win. When you look at these “news” stories you need to try and look at their motives for telling you this as well.
Here you go…
Eurostat, the European Commissions’ database of statistics:
A 77% increase in murder, robbery, assault and sexual offemces since 1997.
From 650,00 to 1.1 million offences now. Almost double.
Violent offences in UK are highest of all European countries.
http://epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/portal/page/portal/crime/documents/violent_crime.pdf
Doesnt really accord with a ‘value’ statement on crime now, does it?
And it also shows that since 2005 the level of violent crime has fallen every year and according to the Daily Mail, by another 7% in the latest figures available.
This would seem to indicate that Labour’s policies are working. Even when I do not agree with all of them.
By the way, does that same database show anything for the years prior to 1997, I would be interested in seeing it.
No, I don’t think it goes back any further.
But Simthereen, you cannot extoll the virtues of ‘falling violent crime’ when the level from which it may now be falling is 50% HIGHER than when Labour took office.
There is no getting away from the fact that there are around 500,000 more violent crimes each year now than 13 years ago. That, is my point.
Read Tom Bower’s book on Gordon Brown and Labour’s tenure. It’s a real eye opener and packed with stats as to how Labour have failed.
