Education boss delighted at exam progress

GOVERNMENT figures released on Thursday (23 January) highlight the success of Thurrock’s schools in the summer’s GCSE examinations. Thurrock Council’s education portfolio holder, Cllr John Kent, said: “There are some really pleasing results among these statistics, but most of all we have to recognise the efforts of the students themselves, their families and their teachers. Well done to them all.”

Inadequate teaching at Hassenbrook Academy highlighted in Ofsted report

INADEQUATE teaching and poor behaviour have been highlighted by Ofsted in their latest inspection at Hassenbrook Academy in Stanford-le-Hope. The overall report has informed the school that they "require improvement ". This is the second such report in under two years. If the school are judged to require improvement again then they may be placed in special measures.

THURROCK'S education portfolio holder visited one of the country’s best performing primary schools on Wednesday (8 January) and he didn’t have to step outside the borough. In fact Thurrock boasts two schools in the country’s top 250 – Tudor Court and Orsett C of E. The government announced the list of school ranked for progress between Key Stages 1 and 2 just before Christmas.

Intrepid Lewis charts a passage to India

PALMER'S student and air cadet Lewis Coble spent over two weeks helping to renovate a remote school in the Thar Desert, north-west of India. Lewis, 16 from Grays raised almost £1600 alone to help fund the trip by taking part in a range of fundraising activities including bag packing at his local Asda store, a yard sale and a sponsored trip to every underground station as quickly as possible.

Report judges Orsett primary as ‘Outstanding’

HEADTEACHER, Lallie Godfrey, commented on the report stating, ‘Last year we had an OFSTED Inspection under the new and rigorous Framework and our school was judged to be Good with Outstanding for Behaviour and Safety and Leadership and Management. Since then everyone in our school has worked relentlessly to improve still further and this report, which judges us to be Outstanding overall, is a reflection of the success of the improvements that we have made and we are determined to continue to improve still further.’

Deadline looms for primary school places

THERE is less than a fortnight left to apply for a place at one of Thurrock’s primary schools this coming September. People who apply within the deadline have a far higher chance of receiving their first preference place.

Primary school focusses on road safety

During autumn pupils were invited to take part in a Raincoat poetry competition run by Thurrock Council’s road safety team. They were asked to say how much fun they can have splashing in puddles and how dry they stay when their under an umbrella or how much they hate the gloomy mornings.
