Ambulance Service: Your service, your say – the consultation results

During winter 2010/2011, people from across the region took the opportunity to influence how the NHS Foundation Trust will be set up by attending 24 consultation events held for those who work for the service, the organisations who work alongside it, and members of the public. Attendees were asked to comment on aspects such as what service improvements they wanted to see, the make-up of the Members Council and appointed governors, and which outside organisations should be involved.

Lung awareness launch set for next week

The launch of a “Get It Off Your Chest” campaign will be held at the Aveley Village Community Forum in the High Street from 1pm. The campaign aims to make people aware of the early symptoms of the disease.

Lions roar in with mobility scooters

THROUGHOUT THE year, the Thurrock Lions can be seen helping a vast array of organisations around the borough. Last week was no exception as Dominic Cox and the team met at the Transvol bus at Morrisons in Grays to hand over a number of 21st century mobility scooters.

National Carers’ Week next week

National Carers’ Week starts on Monday, 13 June, and Thurrock’s Carers’ Centre is marking the occasion in right-royal style. On the Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons the centre, in Cromwell Road will be showing The King’s Speech film on a large screen in the hall for service users and their carers.

Former councillor’s battle to regain health after stroke

"On the 31st January 2011 Stephen Andrews had a stroke whilst driving his car. He was driving through a small village called Ainsford, Kent at the time and it overcame him although he managed to pull the car to one side and parked next to a house on double yellow lines. He was not discovered for some two hours or more as it happened around 10.15 am and he did not reach Darent Valley Hospital, Dartford until 1.20pm.

Thurrock Mind Open Day

WHEN IT COMES to the treatment of mental health we have come a long way since "There there dear" or 'Just Keep Busy". The vast array of services provided by Thurrock Mind illustrate that their service users are very well provided for. The issue of mental health is still something of a taboo subject. However, when you consider that 15% of the UK workforce have some form of mental illness and 8% a serious mental illness then we have to accept that it is part of our nature.

Health heroes 2011: nominations open

NHS South West Essex wants to hear about local health heroes, so that it can recognise and commend them at its AGM in the autumn. Every day doctors, nurses and healthcare workers help to: save lives; improve the health of hundreds of people; give advice and guidance to support people through difficult times or to access the right services in the right place at the right time.

IVF funding reinstated

NHS South West Essex has reinstated funding for IVF, following its suspension in autumn 2010 as part of the primary care trust's turnaround plans. Having closed the 2010/11 year in financial balance, the primary care trust reinstated funding for IVF from the beginning of the new financial year on 1 April 2011.

Thurrock’s Community Health Services go to North London

John Brouder, chief executive of NELFT says: “We are delighted to be managing community health services in south west Essex. We already have a reputation for providing high quality community health services, and for working with healthcare partners to find innovative ways of supporting patients out of hospital. "We are now looking forward to working with community health services in the south west Essex area, building on a programme of continuous improvement, so that local people continue to receive excellent treatment and care.

Inspections to Thurrock Care Homes seen to drop by 70%

Inspection levels were particularly low in October to December 2010, after the registration system was introduced, before recovering in 2011. But levels were still 55% lower in January to March this year, compared with the same time a year earlier. The CQC said the drop in inspections reflected the demands on staff of implementing new registration systems for health and social care providers, which will soon be extended to GPs.

Kathy Club this Thursday

THE SECOND Kathy Club will take place on Thursday 12th May 2011. 10.30 - 2.30 at St Thomas' church, 16 East Thurrock Road Grays Essex. The cost to the service user is £5.00 which will go towards future events and parties. Tea is included throughout the day, and they will also have cakes on sale to raise cash for St Lukes.

John Stanley: Caring with dignity

THE JOHN Stanley Care Agency recently won two awards at the Dignity Care Awards run by Thurrock Lifestyles Solution, Thurrock Council and Thurrock Link. They were not awards given lightly. YourThurrock went to their HQ in Grays to speak to manager, Lavena Kenyon about the success, the mission statement of the organisation and their hopes for the future.

Thurrock pupils prove how easy it is to pedal

Katie van Dop Sustrans Bike It officer, for Thurrock comments, “I was amazed at the effort from children, parents and teachers for this year’s race, it was a huge success. It was brilliant to see bike sheds and playgrounds full of bikes from children who had got to school under their own steam. “Cycling really helps to improve a child’s confidence, independence and health, not to mention the environment in which we live. The race has encouraged many children and their parents to use two wheels instead of four on the school run, demonstrating just how easy it is to cycle to school.”

Salt tests by Trading Standards

The sampling project looked at a range of bakers from individual firms to national supermarkets. Around 80% of the samples taken were found to be in the amber category of the Food Standards Agency’ (FSA) traffic light system and the remainder were red. The FSA traffic light system uses red, amber and green to advise consumer on healthy choices for certain nutritional benefits of food including fat and salt levels. The more green lights on a food the healthier it is.
