THROUGHOUT January, Thurrock Council will collect unwanted electrical equipment and dispose of it – free of charge.

“If it’s got a plug, we’ll shift it,” says the council’s environment portfolio holder, Cllr Victoria Holloway.

Residents are asked to contact the council on 01375 366071 to book an appointment and to arrange for the equipment to be collected from where their home meets the street.

“Everything from hair dryers to fridges and freezers, if you contact us we’ll come and collect and dispose of properly.

“It means old computer equipment, televisions, radios, even washing machines,” said Cllr Holloway.

After January people will be expected to dispose of their own equipment, or to pay somebody to do it for them – safely and legally.

“Some electrical items contain some pretty nasty stuff, poisons, heavy metals and carcinogens and they have to be disposed off carefully.

“Our civic amenity site – the ‘tip’ at Buckingham Hill Road in Linford – is set up to deal with most of these, but we know it can be difficult to get some of the larger white goods there.

“Just for January we are offering all residents of Thurrock the chance to clear their homes of this unwanted space-filling equipment once and for all, and free.”
