Young people in Tilbury can benefit from 'a home away from home' at Tilbury Youth Centre with new recreational equipment and WiFi, thanks to accelerated funding from the Tilbury Town Fund Board. The fast-tracked £500,000 funding was provided to the board in November 2020 and divided between projects in Tilbury, as part of the government's £3.6billion Towns Fund. Pool tables, table football and console games can be enjoyed as the centre, based at Centenary House, starts to open back up to larger groups. Young people can also benefit from free WiFi access, as requested by the Thurrock Youth Cabinet. A professional music studio will also be available by the summer. Chair of Tilbury Town Fund Board, Peter Ward, said: "This funding has enabled the board to kick-off many projects that will transform Tilbury and keep the needs of its community at the forefront of its regeneration." Cllr Andrew Jefferies, Cabinet Member for Education, said: "We want the centre to be a home away from home for young people who have felt isolated throughout the pandemic and had limited interaction with their peers due to COVID-19 restrictions. "Young people can take advantage of one-to-one mentoring sessions that have been restarted at the centre to address mental health and wellbeing." Tilbury Town Fund Board has funded other projects including new outdoor fitness and Parkour areas at King George playing field and Anchor Fields park; additional walking routes; and the demolition of the old Fire Station that will be the site of the new Tilbury Integrated Medical Centre.
