Our social afternoon was the annual craft and produce show with judges Jeanette Shilling and Maureen Downes doing an excellent job for which we thanked them for giving up their time. The hand-knitted entries were sent to the Seamen’s Mission at Tilbury and the overall winner of the show was Linda Farman.

ONE of the leading kickboxing clubs in the borough will be holding a special demonstration at Lakeside on Saturday. Steve Kerridge's Purfleet club will demonstrate Muay Thai/Kickboxing disciplines at the Decathlon Superstore in Lakeside Retail Park.

Thurrock got off to the perfect start as centre Ben Stanley skipped over wide out, brother Michael then made no mistake with the conversion. Thurrock conceded a couple of penalties to bring them within a point but it was the duo that extended the Thurrock lead Ben adding his second try and Mike adding the extras. Thurrock was very much to the fore and prop Aston Bevans-Royston crashed over to score wide out. But Braintree would not lie down and came back with a converted try.

The home side weathered early pressure and worked their way up field to score an excellent try against the run of play. Flying winger Nathan Dawson sped through the narrowest gaps on the blind side and scampered over the line. Chelmsford raised their game and put together a powerful drive and were rewarded with a try of their own.
The game started with T’s applying immediate pressure and this spurred on the ladies to completely believe in themselves. Early pressure resulted in Miriam Nicholls setting up a great goal for captain Tessa Ing to hammer home. The second goal came from set play where Sally Ellis was on hand to pick up from yet another fine shot from Ing.
With the opening game of the season just one week away, the men were far from full strength, even having to draft in some old faces, so to not only beat newly their newly promoted opponents, but to beat them convincingly, showed just how far the club has progressed in the last year or so.
