Churches coming together to start good news project

THURROCK churches are coming together to celebrate the good things happening in the borough after becoming angry after the survey that saw the borough sit at the bottom in the Government's wellbeing survey. One local resident bleakly told the Guardian it was "one big cesspit here" but instead of joining in the sentiment, Colin Baker, of local church group Transformation Thurrock, decided to bring churches together to cast a different vision for the borough.

Sun shines on Harris primary fete

THEY are usually quite lucky with the weather and this weekend was no exception. Hundreds flocked to the Harris Primary Academy in Mayflower Road to enjoy a host of activities.The dog show was a particular favourite but most people were happy and content to sit out and enjoy the summer weather (while it lasted).

Cream teas at St Marys

CAKES and scones with jam and oodles of cream will be on offer at the St Mary’s Cream Tea on Saturday 13th July. Come along between 2 and 4pm to the hall beside St Mary’s church in Dock Road Little Thurrock.

THE West Tilbury 72nd Birthday Party went with a swing President Margaret Clamp invited guests from Institutes in the Thames Group who joined members for the evening to join us in singing Jerusalem before sitting down to an excellent buffet prepared by the members.

Double helping of Tosca for Thurrock

THE Royal Opera House’s Insights event will explore Tosca with an introduction to the story, performances of arias from the opera sung by members of the Royal Opera Chorus and the opportunity to join in some of the opera’s musical highlights under the direction of a member of The Royal Opera Music Staff. No previous singing experience is necessary, just an enthusiasm to join in. Everyone will then be fully prepared for the Big Screen performance of Tosca.

New post office opens up at civic offices

Council's Leader, Cllr John Kent joined Post Office staff to mark the opening of the Grays Post Office this morning (Monday 24 June) at the Civic Offices. This new location is a temporary solution for the next six to 12 months until a permanent solution office can be found.

North Stifford Fete raises over £3,000

The proceeds will got to Essex Air Ambulance will receive £1,000; Help for Heroes : £1,000; Basildon Neo-natal : £600.The remaining money will go to Spectrum Brass, Cancer Research Uk, St Mary's Church Organ Fund, and the Village Hall.

Port of Tilbury welcome children from Chernobyl

MANY children in the Ukraine and Belarus still endure daily the effects of the radioactive fallout from Chernobyl. This was an entirely new experience for these children, whose homes are far from the sea and have only seen photographs of ships. The Chernobyl Children’s Life Line charity in partnership with the Port of Tilbury, took the opportunity to provide them with an experience during their stay in the U.K they will remember fondly.

Suspected illegal immigrant arrested in Aveley

A MAN suspected of being an illegal immigrant was arrested in Aveley on Friday afternoon. A member of public alerted police at just after 2.50pm after a number of men were seen to leave a lorry near to Hall Avenue.

TTMS invite you in to the Little Shop of Horrors

STEP right up to the Thameside Theatre next week and see the fabulous Audrey II, the worlds strangest and most interesting unidentified plant....... Thurrock based Am Dram group Thurrock Thameside Musical Society (TTMS) are staging 4 performances of the brilliant comedy musical Little Shop of Horrors at the Thameside Theatre between the 4th and 6th of July. This lively show was made famous in the 1980's by the film of the same name which starred Rick Moranis and Steve Martin. TTMS don't have them, but they do have an amazing line up of Thurrock talent who have been rehearsing hard to bring this fun and challenging musical production to life.

Corringham Rotary have a fair cop at charter night

The Rotary Club of Corringham Thameside lived up to their reputation as the “fun club” when they celebrated their 32nd Charter and President’s night at The Ivory rooms at Billericay on Friday 28th June. Sixty guests were present to honour outgoing President John Wallington and to witness the passing of the chain of office to incoming President Danny Lawrence, the deputy mayor of Basildon.
