Minister of State for FE visits South Essex College

The Minister made very positive comment about the work of the College and was impressed by the briefing, which was delivered by the College’s Acting Principal and Chief Executive, John Hayles. He then took the opportunity to meet some of the College’s Apprentices and Further Education students.

Bethan’s poems take her from Grays to the dreaming spires of Oxford

A-level student Bethan Smith, 18, from Grays beat out competition from over 600 entries to come second in the Christopher Tower Poetry Competition run by Oxford University. With an aim of promoting the reading and writing of poetry in young people, the annual competition is open to entrants between 16 – 18 years old and offers a first prize of £3000.

Quarry Hill heroes raise money for stroke survivors

Recently, George Rogers and Cameron Sherman-Coulson decided to raise money to help the Stroke Association after his uncle suffered from a stroke. They organised a number of fund-raising activities around the school and afterwards organised an assembly where Chris Hamilton of the Stroke Project attended and awarded the boys with a certificate of achievement each.

Grays Convent pupils win a minibus!

The brief was to draw or paint what the next 100 years will look like for personal transport. The girls designed an eco friendly futuristic vehicle and were absolutely thrilled to get the news that they had won.

Tennis prodigy comes to Hassenbrook Academy

PAKISTANI TENNIS prodigy Talal Almas could be a name for the future. He is certainly making a name for himself now as he is set to take on the junior versions of the Grand Slams this year. Talal has been hitting the headlines in Pakistan as he has won a number of junior tournaments. Talal has also divided his time, training in California as well as the United Kingdom.

Studio school well on the way at Ockendon Academy

Principal Barbara King invited along Thurrock MP Jackie Doyle Price to hammer in nails and contribute to the building of the school, which will help to not only increase the size of the school but also see the implementation of the vocational studio school.

Chafford super-head goes from strength to strength in Eltham

Blaming that poor achievement on leadership failure, Mr Tomlinson said tightening up on student behaviour had improved things. He said: "The school has become a lot stricter. There are clearer boundaries."

Fire in the hole!: Experiments at Treetops

YOU KNOW, the students at Treetops write all the best headlines! After a busy and active science lesson, the students are put through their paces on the nature of a safe experiment. Glasses on, stand at the right angle. All the basics. The students responded very well and in many ways illustrates the imaginative and active nature of teaching at Treetops.

Tenants serenaded by school choir

This is the second time they have sung at the hall. The children received refreshments and nibbles once they have finished and tenants get a chance to speak with them. It is also an opportunity for the choir to get in some practice and tenants love it.

Gateway Academy Dance Show Part Two

TO BE honest, we can't stop raving about this show. It was fantastic and it has been a pleasure to film and edit. This part has some outstanding elements including what we call the "Clock piece".

This year was the best yet. We found it hard to edit it down, so will be showing the show over the next few days. It was just so good, so colourful, so dramatic, so well choreographed and so well executed.

Danish teachers welcomed to Harris Academy

It was the trainees' first visit in a British School and they found the structure fascinating. They observed several lessons and were impressed with the teaching and learning as well as the way the students responded to their teachers. The trainee teachers were given the opportunity to visit Chafford Hundred Primary School and were delighted to have had the chance to gain first-hand experience in both a primary and a secondary school in England in one day.

Fashion-Turn to South Essex College

Production Arts student, Nicola Newton, 16, from South Ockendon, said: “This is the first time any of us have done make up for a Fashion Show so was a real challenge and was a great experience for us to get involved behind the scenes. We were also helping Boots and Debenhams with their beauty products.”
