Satash Community Care Project: Winning Accolades

It is no surprise that the name Satash has become a by-word in the borough for top quality care. From the Thurrock Business Awards to the 5 Star Scores on the Doors Award and now they are just back from the Dorchester Hotel in London's Mayfair having scooped the Skills for Care Accolade.

Tories keep pressure on health issues

POLITICAL colours don't really come to the fore in the committees at Thurrock Council. If you sat in on the Licensing Committee or Planning Committee you would be hard pressed to distinguish the Tories from Labour from Independent. However, the three Tories who sit on Health and Well-Being Committee have been noted for their relentless pressure on the health services.

Year in review: April

Labour brought out John Healey, Hilary Benn amongst others while the Tories slowly gathered steam with Chris Grayling, Andrew Mitchell, Dominic Grieve, Theresa Villiers, Nick Herbert, Baroness Warsi and Eric Pickles. But it was the appearance of David Cameron on the front lawn at Palmer's College, in front of the world's media that gave tremendous bounce to Jackie and Stephen's campaign as well as un-nerving Labour's hopes.

Year in Review: March

Alastair Campbell, Neil Kinnock, Shahid Malik all in town as Labour bring the big guns out early in anticipation of a May election. Save the horses in South Ockendon, the Tilbury ferry are the campaigns that dominated March. The senior schools are as busy as ever but we thought we would herald the lovely ladies at the Hassenbrook school restaurant.

Thurrock Local History Society: Windmills on their mind

AT the November meeting Susan Yates, chairman of the society, gave an illustrated talk on the windmills of Thurrock. Firstly there was an explanation of the different types of windmill. The internal workings were explained and the various stones described which were used to grind the corn into flour. The history of the Thurrock mills was well researched where records exist. Aveley post mill, which was built pre-1651, was owned by the Barrett-Lennards of Belhus.

Grays Ath v East Thurrock: Off

THE EAGERLY awaited local derby has been called off due to a frozen pitch. Pitch inspections for Hornchurch v Aveley and Brentwood v Tilbury will take place at noon.

Shadow of Grays Athletic “match-fixing” probe refuses to go away.

But one betting source told The Independent in August that: "Of course the Grays game was fixed, but the Gambling Commission lack the skill to prosecute. And the police aren't particularly interested in taking the cases on because they often relate to small events and are relatively small amounts of cash. The Daily Mail reported yesterday:" Enforcement sources claim the Grays game was passed over by police because they were too busy with crime and terrorism."

Review of the Year: February

The fall-out from the controversial planning committee meeting sees a vote of no confidence in Thurrock Council leader Garry Hague is placed on the agenda by..wait for it...a member of his own party. Former leader Ann Cheale! Cllr Cheale is expelled from the party as the Tories put on a brave front. Februarys' council meeting was tremendous theatre with a number of passionate speeches especially from veteran John Everett and Labour's Lynn Worrall. Was Tory leader Garry Hague under pressure? Judge for yourself by this interview straight after the turbulent three hour meeting.

Boxing Day football postponed

Despite the best efforts of Chairman Tommy South and the team down at Ship Lane, Blue Square Bet South fixture, Thurrock v Chelmsford City has been postponed due to a frozen pitch. With no real sign of a let up in the cold weather, clubs are now concerned at not only the fixture pile up but also the financial implications of the cancellations.
