THERE ARE a host of joggers and runners from around the borough who are now making their final preparations for the London Marathon on Sunday April 21st. YT will be catching up with a number of the runners over the next two weeks as they face the mighty challenge of 26 miles and 385 yards.
THURROCK foodbank is holding its first “Foodbank Week “ between 15th and 21st April and they would like you to be part of it. There are various ways to participate with different events and an opportunity to take part in a food collection at Sainsburys, Chafford Hundred.
ST.Luke’s Hospice has opened their first domestic electrical retail shop. The Hospice had previously been tenants of shop in Derwent Parade, South Ockendon for some 15 years, having vacated the property over a year ago to open a larger store across the road.
THE DREAM of a community centre in the middle of Corringham that would stand as a monument to Karis May Darling moved a little closer as a planning application has been submitted. The application is for a building and two storage containers to be used as a community centre in Corringham Town Park, Gordon Road.
DESPITE the cold weather and snowy forecast, lots of supporters came to a Table Top Sale in Horndon on the Hill and raised £350 for Breast Cancer Campaign. The tables sold out in record time and supporters came from all over the community and thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon.
THERE was no doubt that Grays man, Cy Honeyman was tired when he spoke to YT on the phone. It was hardly surprising as he had just completed his third marathon in three days.
Cy had been running the three day Jurassic challenge in Dorset. It is now a case of three down and five to go as he plans to run five more between now and November.
Stanley, 86, has cycled at nearly every Thurrock charity event for the last seventeen years. It is quite a sight at the Thurrock cycle marathon to see the youngsters "walk" their bikes up the North Ockendon hill whilst Stanley. glued to the seat, passes them by a la Sir Bradley.

THE Rotary Club of Thurrock Gateway is a small but flourishing group that is doing so much good work. This work is not only in the borough but infact all over the world. YT went down to their weekly meeting at the Park Inn to speak to Phillip Hills about the recent visit, members had made to India.

AS USUAL, the borough stepped up to the plate when it came to Comic Relief. Offices, schools and communities from Aveley to Fobbing: they all did something funny for money. Sainsburys in Chafford Hundred had a host of activities. Captured on film are the staff attempting to eat a doughnut.
Geoff, age 62 was absolutely staggered to hear they had won and said, “We joined the draw three years ago after one of the charity’s canvassers came to our door. We have always supported children’s charities as our son sadly died at the age of 10 from a brain haemorrhage. We signed up not to win, but to regularly give to the hospices. We will be donating this prize back, as we would like to give Havens Hospices the opportunity of continuing their work within our local community”.
Sonway ‘Juniors’ played a charity reunion match – for Charlie Lawrence’s Marathon fund for Joint Action – at Tilbury’s Chadfields. Charlie is set to run the London Marathon in April just months before his 70th birthday. All of the original Sonway players were there except for two who now live abroad.
SHOPPERS at Lakeside were stopped in their tracks when three different flash mobs wowed the crowds and raised money for charity. Local Bokwa groups surprised shoppers early in the morning and, throughout the afternoon, local Rock Choir members sung their hearts out and Southend street dance crew Designed Kaos performed to raise money for Comic Relief.
