WHEN Horndon woman, Andrea Nunnery, discovered that her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2012, she was determined to raise awareness of breast cancer in younger women and fundraise to help improve diagnosis, treatment and hopefully one day find a cure! Although the prognosis for her sister was good, Andrea has embarked on a series of fund-raising activities culminating in a trek to the Grand Canyon.
Derek explained how on 3rd March 1943 many local people made their way in the pitch dark of the blackout, to file in an orderly manner, down the steps of the unfinished underground station which had been used as a deep air raid shelter since 1940. At 8.27 pm the searchlight went on and three buses unloaded their passengers at the shelter entrance.

FOR the next six weeks Thurrock foodbank is setting a challenge to local people: support us by giving up something small and donating what you save to the foodbank. You can do it with your work colleagues, family and groups of friends. You’ll feel better and be able to help others at the same time.

STAFF at St. Luke’s Hospice in Basildon are delighted they were given a 100% rating by the Care Quality Commission following an unannounced visit to the Hospice in November. The visit has now been backed up by a written report received last week declaring that the Hospice was ‘fully compliant with all standards that were assessed at the time of the inspection’.
Total raised to date stands at £12,936, around half of what has been targeted for budget requirements. Currently the Hospice has in the region of a £63K deficit against their projected 2012/13 budget. Analysing the budget further it is evident that whilst the Hospice, across all departments, is maintaining or working below expected expenditure, direct public donations have dropped to below 2011 levels which is causing concern. The Hospice’s previous Christmas Appeals - reveal a steady decline from £26,000 in 2008 to just under £20,000 in 2011.

The cheque was presented at their annual prize giving and awards evening to Little Havens Community Fundraiser Peter Hall last month at the Springhouse Community Centre in Springhouse Road, Corringham
LEATHERLAND Lodge in South Ockendon raised £103 for Children in Need this week. The care home raises money for a host of charities so it was no surprise that the staff and residents dug deep for the BBC charity.
