Come and see The Show-Offs!

A BRAND new improvised comedy show, performed by a troupe of highly talent professional actors and musicians is coming to the Thameside Theatre in Grays. The Show-Offs is shaped and modelled on "Whose Line Is It Anyway" but there is a difference as the whole show is suggested by the audience.

Apostleship caring for seafarers in Tilbury this easter

WOJCIECH Holub, Apostleship of the Sea’s port chaplain for Tilbury and Thames is aware that for seafarers any festive period is much like any other working day – the only difference being that their separation from family and friends and from their faith can be even more difficult to bear than usual.

More volunteers needed for Thurrock Foodbank

FEEDING of the 5,000. THURROCK foodbank is growing fast and in the last twelve months has provided food for over 4,250 local people in crisis. There is already a great team in place but because the work continues to expand we now need more volunteers to make things happen and ensure we can supply food to those who need it within our borough.

A SPOKESPERSON for The Pegasus said: "The Club is in the process of being bought by a Malaysian businessman. At this moment we have no idea of his intent for the Peg. Our lease expires on May 31st. We are fulfilling our engagements to the end of April. We are holding a farewell weekend over Mayday Bank Holiday.

BULPHAN WI went back 60 years in time at their 85th birthday celebration which had a wartime theme. In the village hall which was set out like a street party, festooned with bunting and with jamjars of wild flowers decorating the tables, 40 members and 32 guests entered into the spirit of the evening by dressing up in uniform (all the forces were represented) appearing in crossover pinafores with “turban” headscarves or transforming themselves into evacuees, complete with gas mask box. The few who hadn’t dressed up were happy to pay a £1 fine, which was sent with this month’s box of donated food to the local foodbank.

Yewande is the pride of Tilbury after completing the London Marathon

TILBURY resident Yewande Kannike has done the town proud by completing the 26.2 mile London Marathon last Sunday. The 46 year old, dubbed ‘Superwoman’ by friends, took 7 hrs and 1 min to complete the race, all in aid of charity. Yewande said: “I knew it was going to be hard but I really wanted to raise money for One Community, a local charity here in Tilbury. Theirs isn’t a cause that immediately pulls at your heartstrings, but they make such a difference to people’s lives by always being there, happy to help and giving people the confidence , skills and information to make things better for themselves and their families.

Crime writer set to come to Blackshots

BLACKSHOTS Library’s reading group has been reading some of crime writer Ian McFadyen’s books - Little White Lies, Frozen to Death, Deadly Secrets and Lillia’s Diary for example. And on Tuesday, 29 April, they will get a chance to meet the author.

Update: Romanians remanded as Lakeside jewellery theft rises to £2 million

DETECTIVES are also appealing for anyone who was in the vicinity of Lakeside at around 3am on Saturday to contact them, including any drivers who may have been disrupted by any of the barricades which had been set up around the shopping centre which are believed to have been planned as a distraction. They also want to hear from anyone who saw any vehicles acting suspiciously during the same time frame.

Free Easter concert with the Grays Town Band

GRAYS Town Band will be holding an Easter Concert on Saturday 19th April 2014 at 7pm, at the Scout Hut, Waterson Road, Chadwell St Mary. Dave Honeywell, the Musical Director, said “Instead of our usual themed concert the programme contains some traditional brass band arrangements together with some more modern ones, so there is something for everyone.”

Thurrock heroes complete the London Marathon

FIRST mention must go to the daughter of John Scowen, Sarah Baxter who completed the course in 6 hrs and 45 mins. Sarah ran for Motor Neurone Disease, an illness that took the life of community champion, John a week ago. Once again, Thurrock Harrier, Pat Dobbs completed the marathon. Pat, 76, has completed every London Marathon since 1981. A truly truly remarkable feat. Pat's time was 4 hrs 47 mins.

PALMER'S College and the Essex County FA are reflecting on the success of the latest completed ‘Team Nineteen’ League during the 2013/14 academic year, a competition which forms part of a project with The FA to help address the drop off in football participation for 16-19-year-olds.

Ockendon mother-of-three jailed over children’s truancy

A 40-year-old South Ockendon mother appeared at Basildon Magistrates Court on Tuesday (8 April) admitting the poor school attendance of her three children. The mother, who cannot be named due to legal reasons, received a 52-day prison sentence in respect of the two older children - aged 15 and 16 years.

Men sought after cash grab from Tescos in Tilbury

POLICE in Grays want to speak to two men captured on CCTV about the suspected theft of a small sum of cash from Tesco Express in Calcutta Road, Tilbury on February 26 around 6pm. Two men were using a self service till and are believed to have taken cash from an open compartment door.

Thurrock arts community mourns the death of John Scowen

THE THURROCK Arts community was in mourning today with the news that the chair of the Thurrock Arts Society, John Scowen has passed away. John passed away after a battle with Motor Neurone disease. He leaves a wife, Jane and two daughters, Sophie and Sarah, as well as his own parents.
