STEPHEN Metcalfe, local MP for South Basildon and East Thurrock, has paid tribute to the perseverance of the Stanford and Corringham carnival volunteers who put on a great show despite the torrential rain and appalling weather. The annual carnival suffered from some of the worst weather of the summer with many attractions and floats having to be cancelled.

THURROCK Council and the Thurrock Council for Voluntary Services are running a free Thurrock Funders Fayre on Tuesday, 10 September, between 2pm and 6pm. The event at The Beehive, Voluntary and Community Resource Centre, in Grays aims to encourage access to funding opportunities by bringing together funding providers and community and voluntary organisations.
GABLE Hall School broke their record with 73% of students getting at least 5 GCSE's. Their mark goes up from 70% in 2012 and 66% in 2011. Ormiston Park Academy were also delighted as they gained 40 of students gaining at least 5 GCSE's incl English and Maths. This mark may go up to 42%. This will be their highest ever mark.

WE RECENTLY published our concerns regarding the collapse of the music scene in Thurrock. We should have added that there are certain pubs such as Burtons, The Kings Arms, Crooked Billet and Corringham Village Hall keeping the scene alive. Down at the Charles Street Hostel in Grays, youth worker, Marc Barnacle is keeping the flame alive as he hosts a number of music sessions with residents.
40 LADIES armed with fold-up chairs made their way to the home of president Janet McCheyne for the August meeting. After Jerusalem and WI business in the garden watched by the sheep and bantams, members were divided into 4 teams and sent to different parts of the house for 4 challenges: finding items in their handbags (won by the scullery team); questions on their Essex WI News magazine (won by the front room team); Dingbats (won by the music room team); and “Name that tune” (won by the kitchen team with full marks!)
