NATIONAL Walk to School Week starts on Monday (20 May) will sees all 40 infant junior and primary schools in Thurrock encouraging their pupils to walk and ride bikes to school.
Thurrock Council’s transport portfolio holder Cllr Andy Smith, said: “It’s well known that walking is key in fighting childhood obesity, but walking to school can be good for children in other ways; helping them learn vital road safety skills, interact with their local environment and developing independence for example.”
CARNEGIE UK Trust has revealed the five winning projects of its £50,000 ‘Neighbourhood News’ initiative which was set up to help develop innovative ways of producing local news.
The winners, Port Talbot MagNet in South Wales, ‘Your Thurrock.com’ in Essex, ‘Brixton Media Ltd’ in London, WHALE Arts in Edinburgh and ‘Cybermoor Ltd’ in Cumbria, were selected from nearly 80 applications from across the UK and Ireland to become a ‘Carnegie Partner’ in the Neighbourhood News initiative.
A NUMBER of events are being held next week to mark Dementia Awareness Week (19 to 25 May). With one in 14 people over the age of 65 and one in six over 80 suffering a form of dementia now and a predicted increase of nearly a quarter in Thurrock by[S1] 2020, dementia is everybody’s business.
Phew! Now that the Federation of Essex WIs has moved AGM dates, we had such a lot of business to get through at our May meeting. We took time to welcome visitor Carol Moring and brand new member Dot Porter, and of course the discussion of the important matter of our wine-tasting outing to new Hall Vineyards also took priority! We will be leaving Bulphan Village Hall at 6.45pm, but places must be pre-booked with Sally. Many complimentary thank you letters were read out from visitors who had attended our birthday party Cabaret Evening last month.
Sir David brushed off the inclement weather to lavish praise on the 120 acre wildlife site calling it "remarkable transformation" The site rests on a thick bed of rubbish and domestic waste and has piled up to form layers that are 30m thick. Sir David said: "We live in a crowded country and need to respect its limits to sustain us. Change like this must become the norm."
THE CHADWELL Community is hosting "Chadwell in Bloom" for the second year running. This year, local residents can enter the competition, as well as the schools and OAP complexes. Residents can enter a front-garden, a hanging-basket/floral-tub or both, and judging will take place during the week commencing July 15th.

ON Sunday 5th May, the two youngest members of Thurrock Gateway Rotary Club achieved their first ever abseil and after a nerve racking 35 minute delay the youngest Rotarian's Claire Pavitt and Jade Abrahams took on the Church Langley Water Tower in a 110 foot abseil for Rotary charities.

LOCAL people are being asked to join in the celebrations of Blackshots Library’s 60th birthday in May. The Blackshots Lane library is celebrating its diamond anniversary in the week of 13 to 18 May and Thurrock Council’s library service has issued an invitation to local people to pop along and join them.
