Celebration of National Volunteer Week begins

VOLUNTEERS' Week is an annual celebration of the fantastic contribution that millions of volunteers make across the UK – and it’s taking place from the 1-7 June 2013. ngage – the community organisation and Volunteer Centre for Thurrock - would like to say a big thank you to all the people who currently volunteer in Thurrock. They want to encourage Thurrock organisations who use volunteers to recognise the valuable contribution that their volunteers are making, and to ensure that they also say a big thank you.

Private fostering – your role

THURROCK Council is asking residents to let them know of any child who is being “privately fostered”. To support this, it is running a free workshop to educate residents about private fostering and what it means.

BLACKSHOTS library recently celebrated sixty glorious years. The special occasion was celebrated with a special party and hundred of residents turned up during the day.

THURROCK Lifestyle Solutions have set a date for their AGM. The date is Friday June 21st between 4pm and 5pm. The meeting will be held at Corringham Hall. Springhouse Road.

Bank Holiday fun at the Orsett Hall Strawberry Fayre

OVER 3000 people attended the Strawberry Fayre held at Orsett Hall on Bank Holiday Monday. There was something to do for all the family and wherever you went you were greeted with smiling faces. The Fayre is a chance for all the family to get together and enjoy an afternoon of fun, food, drink and entertainment at Orsett Hall. 

“Brighter horizons” with St Luke’s Hospice

ST Luke’s Hospice has been supporting people in the local community for many years who have experienced a bereavement through their Macmillan Dove Community Counselling Service,reaching out to people within the locality of Basildon/Thurrock/Billericay & Wickford, offering emotional support, counselling and groups.

Pippa visits primary schools (no-no that one)

When Thurrock Council launched its six-month CCTV vehicle trial, local schools were invited to come up with a name as the car’s main aim is to try and bring an end to dangerous and thoughtless parking outside schools.The winner was eight-year-old Jodie Fullerton, from Grays a pupil at St Thomas of Canterbury primary in Ward Avenue.

West Tilbury WI: May report

FLOWERS were presented to the retiring officers of West Tilbury President Gill Morris and Secretary Nicky Nunn, who have handed their post over this month to new President Margaret Clamp and new Secretary Denise Nice. Liz Wakefield is to take the post of Treasurer and thanks were given to Niki Garwood who has retired from this post and also the position of getting the speaker after many years. Joanne Phillips has taken over the speaker post and members enjoyed a visit to the Westcliffe Theatre to see The Full Monty that Joanne arranged.

Piggs corner residents raise hundreds for MacMillan

A FUND raising afternoon was held at Piggs Corner sheltered housing and extra care complex in Grays on 21 March in aid of The MacMillan Nurses. A big joint effort from residents and staff enabled them to raise £510 from a table top sale at the complex with refreshments and a raffle. The sale was attended by members of the public as well as some relatives of the residents.

Chadwell St Mary Village Hall AGM

THE ANNUAL GENERAL meeting of the Chadwell St Mary Village Hall takes place next month. A spokesperson said: "This will be a crucial meeting to discuss ways of saving our community hall in the face of Thurrock Council's continued withdrawal of funds for repairs, maintenance, insurance, waste collection etc.

Auditions for Thameside pantomime set for next month

Ockendon fire: Praise for Knights in shining armour

They managed to find overnight accommodation in the Knight of Aveley public house. Working with members of the British Red Cross and the Knight of Aveley, volunteers from Thurrock Council assisted the 25 people young and old who could not find alternative accommodation. Staff supplied welfare support and some goods for them as well as offering help to residents in the wider community that night and the following day – assisting a doctor’s surgery log a call to get help get their electricity supply back up and running, for example.
