THURROCK'S Deputy Mayor handed over a cheque worth a million pounds to south Essex businesses on Friday - well, nearly. Cllr Tony Fish was at Ensign Bus Company, Purfleet, to hand over a £14,799 cheque to Ensign Bus managing director bringing the total amount of grants handed out by the Low Carbon Business Programme over the past three years to over £1,000,000.

The acquisition of Morrison for £24 million has been seen as a surprise in many quarters and will no doubt lead to questions about the future of the troubled contract that Morrison has with Thurrock Council.

AROUND 6,500 retail jobs including many at the store in Lakeside Retail Park are at risk after electrical chain Comet confirmed that it will be put into administration next week. Private equity firm OpCapita, which owns the 240-store business, has lined up restructuring specialist Deloitte to act as administrator reports the BBC.

Port of Tilbury team qualify for UK First Aid champs

The Forth Ports team, which is made up of two representatives from the Port of Tilbury and one from the Port of Grangemouth, won their spot in the final competition via a national elimination event approved by St John Ambulance in October. The team achieved second place in the National Industrial First Aid Competition elimination event, securing their place in the ‘Grand Prior Trophy Competition’. Overall First went to the ABP Ipswich A team.

Port of Tilbury throws lifeline to Gravesend to Tilbury ferry

THE FUTURE of the Gravesend to Tilbury Passenger Ferry has been secured for a further 12 months following the injection of a further £20,000 of support from the Port of Tilbury. This is the third year that the Port of Tilbury has provided financial support for the ferry, which is viewed as an important link between the north and south banks of the River Thames and is the last publicly accessible crossing before the Thames reaches the sea. It is estimated that as many as 90 employees of the Port of Tilbury and its tenants make the crossing each day to work at the Port.

THE LAKESIDE RETAIL park has been bought by property giants, Hammerson. In a deal worth over £254.5 million, the company has purchased four parks across the country from the Junction Unit Trust. In a statement the chief executive David Atkins told a newspaper that there continues to be strong consumer demand for retail parks as well as a demand by fashion and catering outlets for space..
