National Grid undertook a wide-ranging public consultation and completed exhaustive technical studies into the plans for connecting the power station to the transmission system (or National Grid if preferred). However, a recent review found that with fewer power generators than originally anticipated needing connecting to the grid in the area, the power station could be connected using the existing substation at South Coryton.

Labour calls for tax break for small businesses in Thurrock

Labour are calling on the government to use the hundreds of millions of pounds of unspent money allocated to the scheme and extend the tax break to all existing small firms, with fewer than 10 employees, who take on extra workers. The national insurance tax break would apply for a year for each additional employee taken on and could help up to 2,790 small businesses in Thurrock.

Essex FSB Chairman, Iain Wicks, said: “The Index, comprising some 1,600 responses from businesses across the UK, recorded a score of -24.5 – the lowest level since the Index started in 2010 and is a fall of some 15.2 points over the quarter. MEP in crisis talks at Petroplus with workers and management

EAST OF ENGLAND and Thurrock MEP, Richard Howitt travelled to Petroplus in Corringham yesterday (Friday) for talks with management and staff. The MEP spent two hours with both groups flanked by Unite rep, Russ Ball. The crisis started at the end of December when the company disclosed that its lenders, a group of 13 international banks, had withdrawn its credit lines of $1 billion. The company needs the financing to supply its refineries with crude oil.

Richard Howitt MEP is leading this network of European unions and politicians in an attempt to help the company put a rescue plan in place and safeguard the jobs at Coryton. The Essex MEP Richard Howitt will meet with the management and unions at the Coryton refinery to report back on the talks in Brussels and to hear the concerns of those directly affected at the plant.
