The competition has captured the imagination of over 40 schools across the East of England, with around 4,800 Year 7 pupils battling it out to spell the highest number of words in French, German or Spanish. Stanley Stefanowski from Chafford Hundred School came third in the German section while Steven Veizi from Gateway Academy came fourth in the Spanish section.
A safety arch was deployed at Chafford Hundred railway station footbridge to detect people travelling to the retail area to commit crime. More than 230 people passed through the safety arch, and no weapons were found. Chief Insp Paul Moor, Thurrock district commander, said: "Safety arches are an effective way for us to deal with people travelling to the area with the intention of committing crime.
At last nights (Wednesday) meeting of the Thurrock council cabinet, the cabinet recommended a number of new strategies based on the review including targeting special areas, more work in schools and naming and shaming offenders.
Shaw Primary School is the first school to be invited to the Workshop as the Royal Opera House Education team in Thurrock runs a pilot scheme to develop organised tours for schools, groups and organisations. THE POLITICAL war between the local education authority (LEA) and the government over academy schools has entered the next level as the government rejected the LEA's plans for Thameside Infants and Juniors to amalgamate as a community school.

Firefighters were called to a fire in a cleaning room at the Debenhams store at Lakeside. The fire was contained to the cleaning room and crews wore two sets of breathing apparatus and used dry powder to quickly extinguish the fire by 10:31hrs.
