MP slams government over tolls and junction 30

There has been a double whammy this week: the news regarding the 66% rise in the tolls was bad enough, now we hear that the improvement work on junction 30 for Lakeside will not happen for at least another four years. Many had understood that not only was it necessary to ease the burden of traffic but that it had been mentioned several times as a key part of helping the increased traffic that will come as part of the deep water port at DP World in Stanford-le-Hope.

Million pound recycling centre mothballed

The recycling and re-use centre in St Clement’s Way, West Thurrock is to be mothballed for up to three years, Thurrock Council has announced. The council is looking at having to save around £15 million in the next financial year — and £10 million in each of the two years following that — and in addition it has been forced to make millions of pounds of savings in the current year.

New bridge could cut through Chadwell and Orsett

A proposed new bridge across the River Thames should be built to the east of Gravesend and link up with Chadwell St Mary reports the BBC. Consultants commissioned by Kent County Council (KCC) said the new £1bn Thames crossing should carry traffic direct to the M11 in Essex rather than the M25. The previous three options included one that cut through Chadwell St Mary and Orsett at Prince Charles Avenue.

Councillors call for borough wide booze ban

Councillor for East Tilbury, John Purkiss called for the ban to stretch further than Ockendon. He said: "This is something that should stretch throughout the borough. There is no reason for people to wander around with cans of booze."

Council cuts still £4 million short

Aveley councillor Wendy Herd asked: "Do all the cuts or efficiency savings that are on the board just now amount in total to the £15 million we need to find?" He said: "The truth is that if you take all the proposals across all the committees, they come to around £11.5 million. That still leaves us with £3.5 million."
