From Hollywood to Grays: Russell Brand opens new Thurrock Mind shop

THE HEADLINE could simply be that Russell Brand never forgets a friend. The friend on this occasion was former school-mate, Sammy Crooks. Sammy and members of his family have been closely linked with Thurrock Mind for years. When Thurrock Mind decided to open a shop in Clarence Road, Grays, Sammy rang his old Grays school friend as asked Russell that if he was passing by, would he mind doing the honours.

Brian Carline brought along his basic tool set, which, together with a wheelbarrow, would be all we would need to garden effectively.  He did admit later that a power washer was also an asset, used with discretion, especially on greenhouses where you could break the glass.

Rotary introduce newest member

THE Rotary Club of Thurrock Gateway inducted its newest member at their meeting on Monday evening  at The Park Inn Hotel, North Stifford. President Karen Sayers-Irving inducted Danny Nicklen (Graduate in Politics) after the evenings committee meetings where a speaker from The Sunshine Centre spoke of their work with children in Tilbury.

Rare sighting of Black Swans at Tilbury Fort

TWO BLACK swans arrived at Tilbury Fort last week. The waters around the fort have been well-known for mute swans, goosanders, herons, cormorants, oyster catchers, great crested grebes, coots, moorhens and a colony of little egrets to name just a few.

Thurrock man wins Countryfile calendar competition

A PHOTOGRAPH taken in Langdon Hills Country Park has won this year’s BBC Countryfile photographic competition. Taken by Bill Robinson, the photo captures a carpet of bluebells, framed by trees, in Coombe Wood. ‘The Dell’ in Langdon Hills beat over 55,000 entries and is one of 12 photos that make up the 2014 Countryfile calendar.

Mayor congratulates One Community in Tilbury

One Community is an independent, Tilbury-based, charity that aims to release local potential by supporting people with employability skills, money management, volunteering, training, housing issues and general information. Honorary Chair, Yewande Kannike, said: “We really appreciated the Mayor and Mayoress taking time out of their busy schedules to spend it with us. Our volunteers who received certificates were thrilled to have their pictures taken with the Mayor.”

Community organisers wanted in Thurrock

NGAGE, the community organisation and volunteer Centre for Thurrock has been chosen to take part in the national Community Organisers’ training scheme, and is starting the hunt for community organisers in Thurrock. Community Organisers is a government funded scheme which aims to train 5,000 ‘community organisers’, individuals who will work in local communities around the country to bring people together, listen to ideas, build networks and support people to tackle the local issues which are important to them.

Thurrock Writers Circle: October report

THURROCK Writers Circle AGM and 18th Anniversary had chairman Joy Ridgewell and the committee returned. Members of the group have been on a Writing Weekend at Ruskin College in Oxford. This was a great learning curve and everyone felt they had improved and advanced their knowledge. Our membership is growing and each person has his own unique style.
