Thurrock marching to national success

THURROCK Marching Brass completed an undefeated season to win the 2013 British Youth Band Association Cadet Class National Championship title at Cannock, West Midlands yesterday. The talented group of musicians and performers have brought Thurrock’s first National Marching Band Championship title home for an incredible 30 years!

Thurrock churches hold multi-cultural day

THE day opened with a discussion about what it means to be all in one family and the power of unity. Delegates were asked to get into small groups and share their best experiences of being in a multicultural setting. Also discussed was how to change mindsets and practices, with tips on how to practical ways on how to welcome and engage people of cultural backgrounds or ways of 'doing' church other than our own. Another section was based on the famous phrase that Jesus used, "Blessed are the peacemakers", with more small group work.

Stay Safe event a success

LAST WEEK over two hundred members of Thurrock Lifestyle Solutions gathered at Grays fire station for a one day seminar entitled Stay Safe. The event did, as its title suggests, cover how individuals and more specifically, those with learning difficulties can stay safe and be aware of the danger signals.

Celebrate Halloween at Grays Shopping Centre

Bring the family along to Grays Shopping Centre this Halloween and see the frightfully scary Frankenstein stilt walker as he explores the centre amongst the shoppers. FREE spooky face painting is also available for all children from 10am – 4pm.

Pills and Shroom: Interview with author Helen Harrod

WE ARE always impressed with the amount of writers in Thurrock. Earlier this year, the Thurrock writers festival illustrated this and this week, we have come across another author. Stanford writer, Helen Harrod's first novel has a fascinating title: "Pills and Shroom".

Asian community learn all about recycling

ON Monday, Thurrock Council’s waste and recycling education officer, Alli Stanford spoke with the Thurrock Asian Association about recycling. It is the first time that such a talk has been given to the association and those who attended brought along an array of recyclable and non-recyclable items that people all too often confuse when it comes to the “what bin to put it in?” question.

P&G give generously to Seafarers’ Christmas Parcel Appeal

"THE people of Thurrock always show their immense generosity to the guys on the ships at this time of year," says Paul. "For the past couple of years, we've been able to hand out over a thousand parcels to Filipinos, Chinese and other nationalities who find themselves spending Christmas berthed at Tilbury Docks or the Purfleet jetties. I would like to thank Paul Wilson at P&G for the company's very generous donation."

Santa in the Woods is coming to Langdon Hills

SANTA is coming to the woods at Langdon Hills Country Park, Westley Heights again this year. The Thurrock Council-run park will be hosting its annual and popular ticket-only Santa in the Woods event on the weekends of 7 and 8, and 14 and 15 December.

THE Catholic Women’s League is inviting Thurrock animal lovers to bring their pets to a special blessing. The special event will take place on the feast of St Francis at St Thomas's parish hall in John Street in Grays on Sunday October 13th at 2pm. Our fascinating fact of the day is that the cat is only mentioned once in the Bible.

Ever wondered how many Jedi Knights there are in Thurrock?

THE ANSWER is probably no...however, that is not going to stop us revealing that, according to the 2011 census, there are 452 residents who, when asked what their religion was, answered: Jedi Knight. The ward with the largest number of Jedi Knights is West Thurrock and South Stifford with 41 and the fewest is Tilbury Riverside.

THE PEGASUS club in Corringham has been put up for sale. The Herd Lane club has been advertised on the website for GVA, a leading commercial real estate service. The future of the club has been thrown into doubt after the demise of Petroplus last year.

Family fun day at Davy Down

DAVY Down is hosting another of its successful family activity days on Sunday October 13th from 1 pm to 5 pm. You just turn up at Stifford Pumping Station on Back Lane and join in any of the free giant garden games. Snakes and ladders, draughts, Jenga, Connect 4, basketball and soccer games are there for the asking, with volunteers to show you how to play.
