OCKENDON mum Julie Earle was, for years, like many people, who knew that they had "a book in them". For most people, it stops there, but not for Julie. Julie was inspired by her father and by childrens' authors such as JK Rowling to write a childrens novel. We sat down with Julie to hear about the Magical Gate.
TRIBUTES have been paid to Stifford Clays resident, Vera Vine, who has passed away at the age of 87. Vera was known and loved throughout the borough. For many it was due to her campaigning for better bus routes in the town and for others, it was just her love of life and friendly demeanour.
THE ngage Volunteer Centre Thurrock recently held its free drop-in Volunteer Recruitment Fayre to help local people find volunteering opportunities in Thurrock. Laura Hudson, Volunteer Coordinator said “The Recruitment Fayre was brilliant and we had such a great representation from organisations looking for volunteers. Over 100 people came to the event, some looking to volunteer for the first time and some people were already volunteering in Thurrock, but looking for new opportunities.
DOZENS of organisations from across the borough raised thousands of pounds by taking part in the world's biggest coffee morning on behalf of MacMillan Cancer Care.
Wendy Higginson and her team raised £290 at the Holy Cross church coffee morning in South Ockendon. We then crossed over to the very busy Ockendon hub where the lads from HW Wilson were very busy serving coffee and tea to the assembled throng.
EACH of Thurrock’s nine static libraries has at least one “Home Link” round which provides services to people who cannot get in to visit their local library. Thurrock Council is now on the lookout for relief volunteers to support library staff delivering items.

AS the shipping community gathered in London recently, for the London International Shipping Week, seafarers’ charity Apostleship of the Sea has stressed that crew welfare must remain a top priority for the industry. Newly-appointed port chaplain for Thames and Tilbury Wojciech Holub believes the work of the organisation, which includes ship visits and practical support for seafarers, is more important than ever as shipping becomes more globalised and automated.
RESIDENTS in Stanford will soon find crossing busy Southend Road easier, thanks to a new zebra crossing. Southend Road has long concerned local residents, and a speed survey in 2011 found that over half of drivers regularly broke the 30mph limit, despite it being a residential area. The road is used regularly by residents crossing to use the bus stops, as well as children on the way to school.
