New children’s hospice shop looks for volunteers

LITTLE Havens Hospice, which is part of charity Havens Hospices, expects to open the doors to its newest charity shop on Monday 7th April. The shop, which will be located at 14 King Street, Stanford-Le-Hope, will rely on kind donations to stock the shop floor with clothing and accessories, DVD’s, books, toys and bric-a-brac from the local community, and a team of committed volunteers to help keep it running smoothly.

Council “proud” of debt re-structuring

THURROCK Council will have saved £18 million by its innovative borrowing policy, members were told at Wednesday (26 March) evening’s meeting of the council. Leader, Cllr John Kent, was responding to a question from Cllr Steve Liddiard which asked “Can you tell whether the debt restructuring exercise that was undertaken in 2010 did alleviate the difficult financial situation that the Council found itself in and what has been the effect to date?”

Amber gets the green light to bus routes to health hubs

THURROCK Council has awarded two local bus routes to the Amber Bus & Coach Company – the 11 and 374 – both serving local hospitals. Despite increasing pressure on council funding and reductions in the grant to support local public transport, the council is supporting both services.

Man wanted after distraction burglary in South Ockendon

The man in the Efit is described as about 5ft 6in tall, slim and in his early 20s. He was wearing a dirty white polo top. The man who distracted the woman was said to be in his 30s, plump and bald. He was described as dirty-looking and was wearing a blue and white chequered short-sleeve shirt.

Man arrested over “Threats to kill” in South Ockendon

A MAN is in police custody after being arrested in South Ockendon on Thursday night. Police were called to South Street in South Ockendon at 10pm.

Chafford man sentenced to four life sentences for armed robberies

A MAN from Chafford Hundred has been given four life sentences for a series of armed robberies in London and Hertfordshire. Wayne Colligan, 43 of Daniel Close, Chafford Hundred, had previously pleaded guilty to six offences. He was sentenced at the Old Bailey today (3 April) as follows:

Increased calls to ambulance service after smog

PARAMEDICS have reported an increase in calls amid continuing warnings over air pollution in Essex. The East of England Ambulance Service said demand was up by six per cent yesterday (April 3) compared with previous Wednesday.

Woman posing as Essex police officer attempts telephone scam in Thurrock

A WOMAN posing as an Essex police officer is the latest fraudster to attempt to steal money or credit cards in a complex telephone scam being carried out across the county. The woman, who calls herself Jennifer Clark, or Jennifer Lark, has tried at least 12 times in the past few weeks to steal from elderly or vulnerable people.

THE worst air pollution in 60 years is set to sweep through Thurrock tomorrow and could have a considerable impact on the sick and vulnerable. Defra has warned people to be braced for "very high" levels of air pollution between Wednesday and Friday.

Purfleet proud of pocket park

Appeal after hooded thugs attack man in Grays

POLICE in Grays are appealing for information following an incident in the town centre in the early hours of Saturday morning. A 60-year-old man from the Rainham area, was assaulted by two men in hooded jumpers who tried to steal his bag. He was attacked sometime between 00.45am and 1am on Saturday, March 29. During the struggle, the men kicked him in the ribs whilst he was on the floor. They did not manage to steal his bag.
