ON FRIDAY, South Basildon and East Thurrock MP Stephen Metcalfe had the pleasure of opening the new playground next to Orsett cricket club. Whilst there, we took the opportunity to catch up with Stephen on a number of issues including the academies and the alternative vote campaign.
This time it is in Orsett. Deputy leader Val Morris-Cook, Orsett councillors Diane and Mike Revell and chair of Veoila Mardyke Trust, Charlie Curtis as well as plenty of children came together to officially open the playground.
Hosted by Thurrock Disability Network and staffed by pupils from Beacon Hill School, the exhibition was an opportunity for disabled people to talk face to face both to council officers and local taxi and bus providers about their concerns. Trans-Vol, Thurrock’s community transport project, was well represented and Dave Meheghan, the manager, proudly displayed the latest addition to their fleet of vehicles. Wheelchair users also tried out a rear loading private hire car which took them for a spin.

Thurrock come out of the blocks strong and fast, playing some lovely hockey allover the field, the captain Steve Abbott opened the score line to make it 1-0 after a good passing move. Still applying the pressure Christian Jenkins struck home with a second but was disallowed due to not being in the D. The home side did look dangerous on the break and had some good chances but man of the match Tommy Ing, with some good defending, and Keith Mager in the Thurrock goal making some good saves, kept Thurrock in front. Just before half time Waltham Forest converted a good passing move to make it 1-1.
THEY have only been playing for a few years but the Year 9 Gateway team proved last week that the rugby revolution at the Tilbury school is well under way. Full report to follow but in the meantime enjoy a ten minute version of the comprehensive victory by the team.

LYDIA was the guest singer at the Your Voice showcase at the Thameside Theatre last week. The show, a partnership between the Thurrock Music Services, the Thameside Theatre and YourThurrock.Com was a very entertaining evening. Lydia has already appeared on the West End stage in Billy Elliot and on Channel 5's Don't Stop Believing.
Activists will meet at the Moto services on the M2 at 8am and drive through the Dartford Crossing in convoy winding their way to Coryton. This will be the third attempt at a protest at the refinery. The other two protests had less than ten protestors marshalled by dozens of police officers.
The exhibition is on at the centre, in Centurion Way, every Sunday and Thursday from March 6 to 27, and will feature archive photographs and documents. The exhibition will showcase the career of Reginald Joseph Mitchell, who designed the iconic British aircraft.
