Tony Spiers who was the founder of the Essex Media Group and The South East Television and Media Workshop has lost his brave battle against Leukaemia .
They cycled through South Ockendon before heading out towards Brentwood, through to Chipping Ongar and the country lanes of Matching Green, Hatfield Heath and then to Stansted. The four members of staff were: Steven Plumb, Maintenance team, Lewis Withrington, F&B Supervisor, Reece Cross, F&B Supervisor and Mitchell Howley, F&B team member.
Tracy said: This Sunday (May 27th), I will be tackling the Edinburgh Marathon and running again for the charity Ovarian Cancer Action in memory of my mum who passed away at 49 (not much older than I am now) from this devastating disease.
The tournament raised £650 pounds for Mitchell, his Grandmother Jennyfer Nicholls and close family friend Davina Linnen attended The Gateway Academy in Tilbury to receive the cheque on behalf of the appeal. Jennyfer said; "This morning i was very honoured to be invited to collect on behalf of my grandsons charity a cheque for over £650 that was raised by Karate clubs that came together for a very big competition.
Throughout the charity cycle relay, the team are being supported by a number of local and national sponsors, including master sponsor Bibendum, along with: ALD, Adavid, Birtwistles, Bluebell, Coca Cola, Hobart, Matthew Clarke, MRP, Perry Scott Nash, Positive Safety Training, Reynolds and Tudor.
It is for a great cause, Combat Stress. Combat Stress provides a dedicated service for Veterans whose mental health condition is often complex and long term. This service is NOT routinely available in the NHS or elsewhere.
Despite being told at the time that he would never walk again, he has since undertaken a number of physical challenges for charity, including walking the London Marathon in 2009 over 14 days. His fundraising efforts have raised well over a million pounds, gaining national media attention and several national awards.
Tony said: “Ever since I have been a toddler, the event has been a huge part of my life. My Nan lived directly on the route and the marathon always provided the setting for annual family get together and I was always wrapped up in the atmosphere and the magic of what people were doing and achieving.
A charity night at the Desi restaurant in Orsett Road earlier in the year raised £636.13 for Little Haven’s Children’s Hospice — one of the mayor’s charities this year. One of the restaurant’s owners, Abdul Wahid, said: “We all live in this community as well as work here and we wanted to do something to help the community too.”
Emma Biddle, food donations coordinator for Thurrock foodbank, said: “We would like to thank all the shoppers at Sainsbury’s and Tesco who donated food to us. Both were great days and we collected a huge amount of food for local people in crisis.”
David Emery, Head of Retail at St. Luke’s explained ‘The shop, which sells donated items including clothing, pictures, china and small items of furniture has already been trading for four weeks prior to the official opening and trade so far has been brilliant – we are delighted with the results so far’’
On Friday 27th April, Phil will be hosted by Lakeside who will be coordinating his walk and providing him with the opportunity to meet young people from the local community. Phil will reach Lakeside and walk a further four miles, starting at 2pm.
Ockendon's Tony Brown ran for Children with Cancer UK. We had featured Tony a few weeks ago and all that training was worth it as he finished in 4.44.47. Grays woman Amy Trencher also had a fantastic marathon. Running for Coleaic UK, she ran a very swift 3hrs 55.39.
