Phil Lisgarten of Grays Baptist Church has achieved what some of us may occasionally think of doing but quickly discard as a mad idea - ride by bicycle the entire length of the British mainland - all for charity!

THURROCK Mayor, cllr Charlie Curtis got on his bike recently when he visited the Thurrock Re-Users Project (TRUP) in East Tilbury.
TRUP now have a large number of bikes that can be re-used but they are still on the look-out for more bikes as well as a bicycle repair man to help.
THE CLOSING DATE for entries to the Blackshots Triathlon is this Sunday, October 9th. The race is on Sunday October 23rd, starting at 7.30am.Starting with a 400m pool based swim, 21K cycle ride followed by an 8K field run.
THE REGULARS at the Oak public house in Grays were determined that Kim Wilson-Mead, 39, John Bolton, 56, and Maureen Ellis, 63, would never be forgotten after they all fell to cancer within a short space of time.
So, recently, led by Sean Ellis, they organised a 24-hour relay on the Treetops school fields. Residents turned up in their droves to take part, in an even that had a great party feel.
Stephen Metcalfe MP also hopes that the test drive will help support the cause of British industry, saying:

IT CAN be a challenging time for charities in Thurrock and you can tell by speaking to many that things are not going to get any easier. As we travel the community festivals throughout the borough, we have spoken to many. Recently, we spoke to Dianna Ferry from Epilepsy Action about the work that they do around the borough and the challenges ahead.
FORMER William Edwards students, Ali Maynard and Charlie Heapy made it to the top of Mt Kilimanjaro at the weekend. After months of training, the girls took a week to get to the highest point in Africa.
They will have a disco, hog roast, rugby tournaments, face painting and raffles. They also have an Essex Fire brigade with one of their vehicles for the kids, and the Police are also coming along with one of their vehicles.
DJ Rob Messer is trekking in Peru in October on behalf of Little Havens Hospice. Rob has organised a Northern Soul night at the Welcome Club in Stanford-le-Hope on Friday night. Doors open at 7.30pm.
FORMER William Edwards students, Ali Maynard and Charlie Heapy are flying off on Friday to scale the heights of Kilimanjaro. For months, the girls have been training along the pathways of Essex and the Sussex hills to take on Africa's highest peak.
He held a number of events including fundraising at Lakeside, a great night out at Stifford Social in Crammavill Street and a golf day at Top Meadow in North Ockendon. The golf day raised £1,383 and we get the feeling that Paul has not stopped there.
"We would be delighted to help our London Borough neighbours who have lost their homes due to the riots. Volunteers have come forward to offer their labour to distribute the goods. We shall be contacting local services providers in the stricken boroughs and hope to get the goods out next week.
