A TURKISH man who assaulted an immigration officer during an illegal working operation in Grays has been jailed for 12 months. Mehmet Tozsu, 24, of Orsett Road, was sentenced when he appeared at Basildon Crown Court. He had pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to charges of possession of a false ID document with intent, seeking the avoidance of enforcement action by deception and assault.
POLICE have appealed for witnesses after a man attempted to steal a teenage boy’s mobile phone at Corringham. The 16-year-old boy was at Mackley Drive near to the junction with Lyndhurst Road when he was grabbed by the shoulders and ordered to hand over the phone, which he was using at the time.
CHILDREN from Gateway Cycling Club have helped to put Thurrock on the latest cycling map. They were asked for suggestions for the redesign of the map by the council’s travel team and Thurrock Cycle Forum.
THE Bookstart Bear visited Thurrock last week as part of National Bookstart Week. Special story times organised by Thurrock Council’s library service were held in libraries, children’s centres and the Thameside Nature Park and High House Production Park.

THE Ockendon Scout and Guide recently celebrated the opening of their £80,000 extension to their Tamarisk Road, Ockendon Headquarters. The extension has added a large Garage for the Group’s canoe trailer and activity equipment together with a purpose built Committee Room above for Meetings and Activities.
“But I am aware schools in Thurrock experience some serious challenges, not least when ministers get obsessed with structures of schools rather than the quality of learning. I am keen to meet all the headteachers of the schools in the Thurrock constituency to find out from them what would make a difference at national level to raise the ambitions and achievements of our young people here in Thurrock.”

THERE were lots of smiling faces in Grays town centre on Saturday (June 14) when Diversity stars Jordan Banjo and Perri Kiely turned up to show their support for Beat the Street Thurrock. The dance troupe duo left their fast moves behind to sign around 200 Beat Box cards and maps for waiting fans.
AROUND midday on Wednesday, June 11th a man using the name of Jonathan Roberts attended the home address of an elderly vulnerable couple and convinced them they needed some work doing to their roof. They couple paid the man £1,000 to fix their roof, which he was due to do the following day, but he never returned.
AROUND 60 businesses and other local organisations learnt about opportunities in the cultural sector at a recent conference hosted by Thurrock’s cutting-edge arts powerhouse. Organised by Thurrock Council and partners such as the Royal Opera House and the Creative Employment Programme, the ‘Culture Change’ event at High House Production Park was judged a great success. It helped delegates learn about possible funding sources and employment support for the creative industries.
