A YOUNG GRAYS entrepreneur has taken what she has learned in the classroom and put it into into practice. Sophie Rowsell, 17, has opened Sophie's Toy Barn in Clarence Road, Grays. YT went down to the shop and asked the Palmer's College student to tell us a little bit more about the venture.
FROM chamber maids to managers and sous chefs to sommeliers, staff at the Park Inn by Radisson Thurrock will be joining forces with guests in September in a bid to raise thousands of pounds for Variety, the children’s charity and The World Childhood Foundation.
THURROCK businesses are being encouraged to look to overseas growth by the region’s largest international trade organisations. Enterprise Europe Network and UK Trade & Investment has partnered with Thurrock Borough Council for a half day export workshop at the Thurrock Learning Shop, Grays on Wednesday October 9.
A UNIQUE and highly flexible state-of-the-art datacentre architecture has won DP World London Gateway’s Information Technology Team a top award for innovation. London Gateway was named winner of the NetApp Visionary Leadership Innovation Award for 2013 for a data storage and management solution, which provides flexibility, reliability and predictability, as well as cost-effectiveness and a reduced carbon footprint, for the UK’s new deepwater container port and logistics park.
INTERNATIONAL Timber has completed the first of three phases of development which will see a new state-of-the-art timber processing and distribution facility built in Purfleet, Essex. Formerly home to British Gypsum, the redevelopment project represents around £7m of investment by International Timber in the area and once complete will create approximately 40 new skilled jobs for local people, in addition to those created during the redevelopment stages.

EIGHTEEN long-term unemployed people celebrated winning a nationally recognised training qualification on Friday (9 August) at the Culver Centre in South Ockendon. Building Futures is a two-week NVQ Level 1 course organised by Wates, one of three contractors chosen to refurbish Thurrock’s council housing stock over the next five years.
Tilbury Power Station Manager, Nigel Staves said the closure was "a sad time for everyone at Tilbury Power Station", adding that he would "like to personally thank all of our staff past and present who have contributed to the success of the station, particularly in the delivery of such a pioneering development for UK biomass". RWE said that it still regarded Tilbury as an "excellent site for power generation" and would now review future plans for the site. It also said it would seek to apply the lessons learnt during the biomass conversion project to other assets in its portfolio.
BUT several months later, YT can reveal that only one Thurrock business has been successful in bidding for funding. Several companies have complained to YT that it is the paperwork that has been the biggest problem.One company that did not wish to be named said: "We like to think that we are seasoned "bidders" but this was just a maze of never ending paperwork.
THE under-construction London Gateway container terminal has secured its first liner customer in the shape of the Southern Africa Express Container Service (SAECS) reports the loadstar.co.uk. The service, operated by a consortium comprising MOL, Deutsche Afrika-Linien (DAL) and Maersk, along with its subsidiary Safmarine, currently makes its UK call at Tilbury’s London Container Terminal.
INTU Lakeside is getting ready to welcome two new shops to the centre over the next few months. The Tanning Shop and Select are the latest stores to sign leases at the Essex shopping centre, and follow the recent opening of stationery, craft and book shop, The Works. The Tanning Shop, one of the UK’s premium tanning solution providers, is to open a salon in the centre’s boutique area of Brompton Walk. The salon, which is also situated near to Dove Spa and Eden Nails, will further complement the range of beauty and lifestyle treatments available in the centre.
After being scouted at intu Lakeside this spring, May was whisked off for an intensive week-long model boot camp of catwalk training, hair and make-up tutorials, health and fitness advice and confidence coaching. Izzie Peskett, Marketing Manager at intu Lakeside, commented, “We’re absolutely delighted that one of our shoppers has won such a fantastic and life changing prize. IT WAS over seven years ago that the Pixelwork team met at Davy Down Park with the then minister, David Miliband to show him their mobile explorer. Since then, mobile technology gurus, Pixelwork has gone on to develop travel apps across the country (including Thurrock).
