Carers celebrate as carers centre remains open

The gallery were delighted to hear that the Thurrock carers centre in Cromwell Road will remain open although it will be outsourced to an independent organisation in either the voluntary or private sector.

MP joins in with Chanukah celebrations

Eric Pickles MP, along with Mrs Pickles, Rabbi Danny Rich (Chief Executive of Liberal Judaism) and many friends from the local and wider community, all trekked through the snow and ice to join with Rosh Tikvah on this momentous occasion. Rabbi Danny Rich, along with the synagogue's Chair, Natasha Radford, led the proceedings, with a physical procession of the scroll, followed by a short service about Chanukah.

Kent slams Kent over bridge proposals

Council leader Kent told the cabinet that the reason for his outrage was "at no stage have Kent consulted us on this proposal. Considering that the proposed bridge will cut through the heart of the borough, yo would have thought they would have discussed things with us."

King Street Stanford sealed off after gas alert

Firefighters were called to a gas main that has fractured. Fire crews have evacuated people from surrounding properties that are at risk. King Street was been closed while the incident was being dealt with.

Roof on Purfleet wine warehouse collapses

Wine companies are anxious for news on the condition of their stocks after the roof collapsed at London City Bond’s warehouse in Purfleet last week reports The Drinks Business magazine. Staff at the warehouse tried to salvage as much stock as possible, but their task was made all the more difficult due to the fact any stock which wasn’t destroyed in the accident was then exposed to potentially damaging sub-zero temperatures.

Masts on Chafford rear their head again

"If O2 can establish that there is an absolute need for a mobile phone mast in the central area of Chafford Hundred then we believe that Location 1 would be the best solution, provided that the mobile phone mast was sited equidistant from all of the residential homes - marked "X" on the peninsular of land between Warren Lane, Lancaster Road, Devonshire Road and Palmerston Rd, as show on the attached map.

Shop and drop at Lakeside

The Shop & Drop service makes Christmas shopping easier and safer for families and gives them the chance to spend quality time together in the centre enjoying the Christmas festivities. This Christmas, Lakeside’s Shop & Drop service is collecting money for the Essex Deaf Children’s Society; last Christmas Lakeside raised £2,468 for Little Havens Children’s Hospice.

Street cricket in Thurrock

The new youth cricket project, Street20 is an urban, funky form of the game, designed to be played in crowded environments and using facilities such as five-a-side football pitches, multi-use-games-areas, basketball courts and sports halls. In Thurrock, Street20 sessions for young people from 11 to18 years have been taking place since September and are run by the Thurrock Nacro Community Sports Project for Thurrock Council.

Fire sees school evacuated

Firefighters were called to a fire in an external electrical box at William Edwards school in Stifford Clays. The incident took place on Monday evening around 7pm. The school building was evacuated as precaution. Part of the building was smoke logged and crews used a high pressure fan to ventilate the area. The incident was dealt with by 19:45hrs.

Only use licensed taxis

There are two kinds of licensed taxis – the first are Hackney Carriages and in Thurrock have yellow stickers and yellow license plates. They can be hailed in the street or be hired from a taxi rank and must use a meter for any journey. Private hire vehicles have green stickers and plates and they must be pre-booked and cannot be hailed on the street.

Deputy leader praises gritting staff

Thurrock has five new gritting lorries with staff working 12-hour shifts to ensure 24-hour coverage during the worst of the weather. In addition 150 staff — from street cleansing, grounds maintenance and waste collection — with help from the Community payback team cleared snow and ice from town centres and other pedestrian areas.

Tilbury match survives but rest postponed

However, with milder weather in Suffolk, AFC Sudbury v Tilbury is still set to go ahead.
