December football fixtures

Twenty seven games in twenty seven days for the five teams in the borough. Everything to play for: Will the Rocks continue their fine run of form; will Thurrock and Aveley keep climbing out of the relegaiton zone while Grays face eight games in that period which may well define their season.

Orsett under-12’s triumph in indoor cricket league

Orsett Cricket Club won the South Essex District Cricket Board’s U12 indoor six a side cricket competition in the most dramatic of styles at Grays School on Friday. The School Lane club clinched the title by reaching Rayleigh's score with just one ball - and one wicket - remaining.

Gritting continues apace

Thurrock Council’s gritting teams have been busy as the snow continued to fall overnight (1 December). Gritting crews travelled the main routes three times overnight — following up on two gritting runs on Tuesday (30 November). Secondary routes are also being gritted today.

Big Draw at Gable Hall

BEFORE the snow, Gable Hall art department were busy bringing their pupils, pupils from the local primary schools and the community together as part of a national initiative called The Big Draw.

Saving money centrally

And on Wednesday (24 November) evening’s meeting of the full council, Cllr Oliver Gerrish, portfolio holder for central services, outlined some of the ways this had been done. He said: “The current financial situation is unprecedented and it is within this context that we must dramatically re-examine everything that we do.” He highlighted the council’s spend on mobile telephones, explaining how a saving had been achieved simply from cancelling unused mobile phone contracts.

Council defend gritting policy as residents complain

Thurrock Council has defended its preparations for the snow on Tuesday morning. Gritting vehicles were out across the borough’s main roads on Monday, twice on Monday night and again on Tuesday morning. The council have made the statement in the light of a number of people contacting YourThurrock complaining at the state of the roads.

Dove Spa celebrates its first birthday

Dove Spa at Lakeside Shopping Centre is preparing to celebrate its first birthday with a range of rather tempting treats. On Thursday 2nd December between 4pm and 8pm, staff will be offering visitors a glass of fizz and a celebration cupcake, along with tours of the spa. There will also be a demonstration of Dove’s January Detox Treatment.

Sheila Steafel at Waterstones

IT has been an absolute joy reading Sheila Steafel's autobiography "When Harry met Sheila". Harry is Harry H Corbett of Steptoe and Son fame and she not only met him but married him. Sheila is one of those actresses who has performed with so many stars from the fifties onwards that it reads like a who's who of british character actresses.

Snow means bin collections suspended

The heavy snowfall has meant Thurrock Council has been forced to suspend all waste and recycling collections, today (Tuesday 30 November). An inspection of road and pavement conditions was carried out at 6am this morning and in order to protect staff, other road users and third party property, the decision to suspend the service was taken.

Thurrock opened the scoring through Mark Brandon who converted a penalty and soon after No8 Bradleigh Rettigan hit the line at pace from a set move to score under the posts, Brandon adding the extras for a 10-0 lead. Eton Manor then had their best spell of the match with a drop goal and converted try to draw level, and then added a further unconverted try to take the lead, and increased it further with a penalty to now lead 18-10.
