Charlie’s blog: On the beach

As interested as everybody was in how Grays Beach was getting on, nobody really wanted to do anything to help it. The official line from any administration, councillor or officer would be, 'Grays Beach is Thurrock's flagship park', which is true, it just isn't treated as such. In the summer of 2009 vandalism at the park reached a new high, the galleon was set on fire and half of it had to be demolished. Unfortunately, rather than be demolished straight away it had a few weeks of tape around it in the middle of the kids' summer holidays.

As the tolls make some £47 million profit each year that shouldn’t be a difficult amount to find so we hope we want to see this work commence early in 2011 so that the congestion which causes such delays for motorists and costs businesses an estimated £21 million a year can be removed.

Winegate dominated the local news and also made the national headlines after three Conservative councillors' behaviour at a civic function, in the Mayor's car and then in a Corringham pub was called into question. It lead to the Deputy Mayor, Eddie Hardiman resigning as Deputy Mayor and the two others, Danny Nicklen and James Halden being castigated. Neither one resigned as a councillor.

Year in review: October

There was the tragic death of Purfleet youngster Lenny Scamp who died from a brain tumour. In many ways the story was of how the Purfleet community gathered together. We discovered that Terry Venables had plans for a sports development in Aveley. We filmed Siya Twani at Gable Hall school as part of Black History month. He was truly inspirational and in a different way, so was Stan Earle at Stan's gym.

Busy year for Transformation Thurrock

2010 has been a year of challenge on a number of levels, but also a year of making headway. I’ve been taken deeper in some directions, while others have been cut off. The challenge of church unity remains my underpinning vision.
