UNDER the government's new health arrangements the Essex Clinical Commissioning Board has the responsibility to order, arrange and pay for stroke services across the county - including Thurrock. Cllr Barbara Rice, Thurrock’s portfolio holder for Health and Adult Social Care, says she is very concerned about its latest decision to downgrade the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) at Basildon.
Dr Ravi Rangasamy, Lead Stroke Consultant, added: “Every five minutes in Britain, someone has a stroke. And it is not just the patient who is affected, but also their relatives. We really need to hear about the experiences and opinions of as many of you as possible so we can do the best possible job for you.”

PEOPLE who have suffered a stroke are being asked to come along to Basildon University Hospital to attend a “Shaping Stroke Services” event.
The Trust needs to recruit patients and carers with experience of stroke for a user group, which will help shape and improve the services we offer to stroke patients. The “Shaping Stroke Services” event will explain more about the group, what it involves and how it will be instrumental in helping redesign the services on offer for future patients. If successful, the group will work to influence services on a local, regional and possibly even a national level.
NATIONAL Adoption week is from 5 to 11 November this year and Thurrock is hosting an evening for potential adoption families next week. Adoption experts say there is a desperate need for more people to come forward to provide 'forever families' and hope National Adoption Week will provide an inspiration for people to come forward.

A SPECIAL remembrance service for families who have lost a baby will take place on Sunday 4 November. The annual Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals, Forget-Me-Not service of remembrance and celebration, is organised by the hospital’s chaplaincy team, with the help of the bereavement midwives.

PATIENT notes are finally entering the 21st century as Basildon and Orsett Hospitals lead the way with a groundbreaking electronic medical records (EMR) system. Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have just celebrated one year anniversary of the launch of its EMR system, which was designed and led by the clinicians who use it.
Women being treated for breast cancer at Basildon University Hospital are benefitting from additional support thanks to a new programme of workshops. Held by the breast cancer nurses at the Trust, and designed by the charity Breast Cancer Care, the workshops are called Moving Forward. A group of eight patients were invited to attend the weekly sessions, where they are offered support and information about life after breast cancer, including treatments, how diet and lifestyle can affect health and the possibility of recurrence of the disease.
LOCAL NHS health and social care professionals showcased how they are helping adults and older people in Thurrock avoid unnecessary hospital admissions at an event on Thursday 20th September at Thurrock Day Hospital.

AN ORSETT two-year-old was rushed to hospital and his mother remains at his bedside after he drank cleaning fluid.
The accident happened at the home of his grandmother Carina Bradshaw.
ON A BEAUTIFUL afternoon, staff and families at Thurrock Womens Aid gathered together to open the new play facilities at the refuge. Helped massively by funding from Runwood Homes as well as supported by Thurrock Council and organisations such as Curves of Corringham, the play area is a tremendous addition to the home and will help children to play out whilst they are there.
During this time, the patient will receive intensive, expert care in a safe and appropriate environment which has been set up specifically for people with dementia. It will also support the patient’s carers and/or family so they are more able and confident to help them when they leave the unit, with the back-up of specialists.
