Gary Wade: Street Poet

THERE IS more to Gary Wade than just his poetry but at this moment in time it is what defines and sustains him. For many, Gary sums up a typical life in Thurrock. Just past thirty, trying to find a job, trying to stay away from temptations, anti-social problems with a neighbour and keen to be seen in a positive light.

Films Of Colour: Making The Nationals

YourThurrock has been particularly impressed with their recent cover version of David Bowie's 2002 single "Slowburn" which was produced as part of a yet to be released tribute album to Bowie. The band had the privilege of recording in the rarefied atmosphere of Air Studios.

Armada: A Shipful of Covers

IF you mention "Cover Bands" you immediately think of "Hi Ho Silver Lining", "Summer of '69" or "Stairway to Heaven" Nothing wrong with that but the members of Stanford-based Armada believed there is a gap in the market for a band that covers the Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon and Muse.

Book Review: Afraid By Sharon McGovern

Sharon is no doubt the heroine and that is re-inforced if you ever have the pleasure of meeting Sharon. It is also re-inforced by the fact that justice triumphs in the end. Even at court, after her step-father was found guilty, she waited on the courtroom steps for the jury to come out. Then, Sharon handed each member a "Thank You" card. She would have done the same if he had been acquitted. The card was for listening.

Godfather Of Oi: Garry Bushell Heads For Lakeside

This book provides a fascinating insight into the life of someone who is equally at home in the company of dockers and villains as rock idols and soap stars; but it is also an honest and moving account of the personal tragedy and pain that has made Garry who he is.

Gerry and The Pacemakers

NOW and again, we sneak over the border. YourThurrock's Mike Jones spent the day at the Havering Show. He caught up with Gerry Marsden from the legendary Gerry and The Pacemakers.

Rehearsals For The People’s Opera: Ludd and Isis

It is a fascinating process. Director Tom Guthrie spends a long time with the "people's" performers, choreographing and nurturing them. It is interesting to watch those involved as we see them in their "ordinary" walks of life. Mike Ostler from the Heritage Groups, Karen Glazzard from the Beehive and Jeffrey Nathan from the Grays Community Forum.
