Information for election day on May 5th

A national referendum on the way we vote will be held in every ward and council elections are due in all but four of Thurrock’s 20 wards. The areas which do not have local council elections scheduled for this year are: Little Thurrock Blackshots, Orsett, South Chafford, and Tilbury St Chad’s.

Thurrock Tories “Big Society” a little closer

"This fund will increase the amount of money, time, expertise and resources available to community groups across the Borough. I hope this will lead to a radical shake-up of how all grants are awarded, and I know the Chief Executive and the relevant directors will be looking to see what other resources can be used as part of this fund."

MP backs PM Cameron’s support for business

There's only one strategy for growth; which is to roll up our sleeves and do everything possible to make it easier for people to start a business and grow a business. We know there's an enterprise culture in this country and that we've got the people, the ideas, the talent, the energy to make things great. That's why the Budget in a few weeks time will tear down the barriers to enterprise and be the most pro-growth Budget this country has seen for a generation.”

MP wants a Thurrock band to “Rock the House”

Jackie Doyle-Price said: “This competition offers a great opportunity to unsigned bands across Thurrock to get some national exposure. I look forward to being able to showcase Thurrock’s musical talent to my colleagues in the House, and for the successful band, who knows where it might lead”.

The Garry Hague Interview: “A New Way Forward”

Garry robustly defends the budget as part of a Conservative "New Way Forward" He clearly believes that their approach to "zero based budgeting" is the way forward for the Thurrock economy as opposed to the "salami-slicing approach by Labour". Garry takes on criticism of the Thurrock Adult Community College and their plans to "package up the Councils leisure activities to enable a specialist organisation to run them."

Motion to move “Lads mags” to top shelf passed by council

We live in an increasingly  media and commercial world where advertising plays an important part, the fashion that retailers think our children might wear is causing debates, the music industry is not always using moral judgment with the content and promotion of artist material, children are aware of this. We, the council have no control over this.

Labour councillor “steaming mad” at Tory proposals to close community college

She said it was the loss of the pre-school she was particularly concerned about, but she urged other groups affected by the proposals to contact her so a combined campaign can be put together with the college itself. She said: “I know people are angry and I fully understand that. All three of my children attended the pre-school at Richmond Road, so I know how important it was to me and remains to the 80 odd children that currently go there every week.

Thurrock councillor defects to UKIP

Speaking from the conference, UKIP local government spokesperson, Cambridgeshire councillor Peter Reeve said: "This is excellent news. Stuart will bring a unique voice to Thurrock Council. We believe that councillors should be there to represent their residents and not there just for their party. We know that is a philosophy that he subscribes to.

Baroness Smith debates Energy Bill

He will know of the criticisms that were made just yesterday of the Minister in the other place, Greg Barker, when he spoke at the Ecobuild conference in London. Concerns were raised by the UK Green Building Council, and the president of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors said that there was not enough certainty or incentives for the industry, and that, although they supported the Government's package of measures as being incredibly ambitious, they were concerned that it would not achieve the objectives. Like the Government, we want this Bill to achieve the objectives that have been set. They are ambitious, and some amendments have been tabled to help the Minister to achieve those objectives, to which we know he is committed.

Why EMA had to go: A councillor’s view

Secondary EMA was described by a Labour education secretary as a means of providing financial incentive for 16 year old to continue in education. Despite the fact that Labour data shows that 90% of students would stay in education without EMA, The critical point is that the school compulsory leaving age is now going from 16 to 18 which means that an incentive to encourage is no longer needed because they will have to stay in the educational system. Surely the leader is not arguing that we provide incentives from that which is compulsory.

Thurrock UKIP bullish after Barnsley result

UKIP are hopeful that they can field a full slate of candidates on May 5th. Whether they can make inroads is a moot point but they will have their eyes on a number of seats including Stifford Clays, Stanford West and Aveley.

Council pledge protest against EMA

Several Tories, including the Council’s youngster recruit and most recent schoolleaver, Cllr James Halden spoke against the motion, but it was passed with support from independent councillors.

Labour Foghorn/Tory Stooge

Later on in the day, a comment passed on our site asked: “Is Your Thurrock a news service or is it just a mouthpiece of the local Conservative party? This article appears, particularly with the words in bold font, to be nothing more than a promotion of the local Conservative Party line. What is it doing on here without any context or balancing comment. It is either shoddy journalism or a political advertisement.

Garry Hague tells John Kent: “You’re in office but not in power!”

Battle lines are drawn for election as Tory leader tells leader of council he is "office bit not in power" and "it leaves the leader and Labour administration in an untenable position.”

Tories put weight behind Devonshire Road petition

We think the proposal is a waste of tax payers money as a full consultation about this was undertaken 2 years ago before the weight limit was installed. The Council has not explained the rationale behind this new consultation so soon after the previous one. The Council is yet to produce any police stats or traffic delay figures to evidence the reason for the new consultation.
